Yeah from a few chicks I know who have worked at bars in town that's actually pretty common.
I knew one chich who was the shooter girl at cowboys who weighed all of 100 lbs. She'd probably have a dozen or more shots bought for her every night. If she drank all of those she'd be dead, so she just drank her cranberry juice and kept the cash.

I listened to a Stuff You Should Know podcast about tipping recently, and they talked about servers in the US getting lower wages than minimum wage because they relied on gratuity. I can really understand all the hate for people who don't tip when you're only making $2/hr.

I've definitely gotten drunk before and tried to buy a server a drink. I deserved to have my money taken for doing so.

I worked at a bar where we all did that all the time. Every time a girl/guy bought me a shot i would shoot iced tea from a JD bottle

I came into this thread expecting a discussion about ***TIPPING SERVERS*** and what gratuities they should get!!!!
I expected a cordial discussion with a side of mild snark. ****AND I WANTED EXTRA DIPPING SAUCES****
But I DID NOT ORDER A SIDE OF CRAZY. Springs1 BROUGHT ME CRAZY AND I DID NOT ORDER IT!!!
You may say it is the fault of the internet for allowing this thread to exist, but IT IS YOUR FAULT. I wanted a nice discussion, and you went and dropped a heaping plate of **CRAZY** in front of me!! And you don't expect me to react!!!?
I AM AN INTERNET PARTICIPANT AND DEMAND SATISFACTION!
This leads me to the OBVIOUS QUESTION:
Springs1: do you have a favorite restaurant you would recommend?

I stop going to places where the takeout has a tip option.
I don't want to tip for takeout, but I'm afraid of what the people who make handle my food will do if I gain a reputation as a non-tipper.

In the US usually $1 dollar tip is enough to satiate the take out person. Now if you are taking out tons of food in the $100 plus range than it might require more.

Go on every forum you know and create an account with that name. Post about how servers are useless and never deserve a tip?

I'm not against tipping on take out. I just have no idea what is a reasonable level. If 15% is a server and dishes level tip, what is it 10%? Is only 5% less tip worth not getting table service and dishes done? How about 5%? Now am I at insult level?
More I think about it, If $1 tip is good, then maybe throwing them 5% is worth it, but only on my regular places. One off places I will skip.

When I go into a coffee shop I take a $5 bill. That's what I give, including tip. If the coffee or americano is $2, they get $3. If its $4.90 like it was today at that Phil and Sebastian place, they get 10 cents. If they can charge that much for coffee, they can afford to pay decent wages.

Pretty much the same as a restaurant. I have friends who worked/work there. They make pretty much the same percentage as most waiters just on more seats, but they also tip out more because they have food runners.

Tip depends on what I have put the restaurant through. If I am with wife or by myself, then it's not much. If we bring our kids and the general area around us looks like a food fight broke out after, then pretty much regardless of the service they'll get a decent tip.
Take out, never unless they do something extra special to keep my food safe during transport. I am not sure about some places though. The debit machine at Wonton King looks apologetic about having the tip function there and gives some instructions on how to get passed it quickly.

I think the problem is that without knowing how salaries work in other countries, it`s hard to determine whether your tips are going to a good cause or not.
That said, China was the most lax place I have ever been. Heck, you could sit in the restaurant all day, use their hot water to brew your own tea, play a few rounds of mahjong, and buy a few steam buns once in a while, no tips were expected.

10. Servers that waste time writing "Thank you" or doodle their name or whatever on your check.
22. Servers that make remarks or comments about WHAT you order. Once, a waitress said to me "ARE YOU TASTE TESTING" just because I changed margaritas. I think that's mean. I just told her I like both. What business is it of hers if I was trying drinks anyways? I have had both before and just like BOTH, what's wrong with that? WHY make people feel like oddballs? What a waste of time when she could have been putting that order into the computer instead of being mean like that.
31. Servers that argue with you whether you are right or wrong, but especially when you are right.
35. Servers that tell you their opinion about what you are ordering such as them telling you it’s their favorite when you have ordered that item lots of times or even if you just are trying it, if you don’t know the person well personally, then WHY would we want their opinion. I HATE when servers say “GOOD CHOICE” when you order something.

I was just thinking this is what it might sound like if Karl Pilkington was critiquing restaurants abroad.

Clearly you don't give a tinkers damn that people find the capping annoying and insulting. That's a self centered view you have there and a great way to cause people to not read your posts. You must be a really insecure person.
