The NHL is more of a team league now than it ever has been. The days of 1 or 2 superstars carrying the team to a cup are done. It takes 4 lines and 3 d pairings plus lots of depth and a good goalie to win these days. Edmonton has maybe 2 of those 4 lines and that's it.

Yup. The Pens have Crosby (best player in the game) and Malkin who is no slouch and the Flames lasted longer in the playoffs then the Pens.

sure, because this single year is a big enough sample to make sweeping judgments...

Well, the point is, regardless of the talent you have in one or even two players, it might not be enough and in many cases isn't, because this is a team game.

Let's hope the Flames are more like the Hawks and the Oilers are more like the Pens.

I'll take the two cups and consistent winning of the Hawks over the one cup and general disappointment of the Pens.

Nope, but it combined with the past 5 are.

Back on topic, McLellan has proven he can take a team of stars to the playoffs, but they have underperformed each time. To me thats on coaching/preparedness. I don't think he's the answer Edmonton is looking for, but I also don't think any coach could succeed with the team as it is.

It's already setting up like that except Edmonton doesn't have the first round pick goalie (Fleury)......well....they did but he got goalie PTSD and had to be rehabbed in Arizona and Minny.

It'll probably be Monahan's task to shut down McDavid for the next decade or so. Might be Sam Bennett though.

We don't need to posture and talk about how they will be playoff failures, might not be a dynasty because Malkin and Crosby only have 1 cup. Now if they aren't eliminated from the race by Halloween, then let's talk.

Michael Ferland, Sean Monahan, Sam Bennett, Michael Backlund and Hunter Smith who did a really good job in the OHL playoffs shutting McDavid down. Kid's gonna have a hard time. That's not even counting the Western Centremen he will have to go up against.

They will need some real toughness up in Edmonton to protect this kid. He will not have the free reign like gretzky did and is going to be run constantly. It's not like they have anyone who is really that tough or any deterrent.

winning a cup ain't easy; i just find if funny how people refuse to acknowledge the Oilers moving in the right direction (for a change).

McDavid may not be a good as crosby, but he has been acknowledged roundly as being the best player since crosby...

It pisses me off that the Oilers won yet another draft lottery, but eventually, even teams with ####ty records of developing players turn it around...people don't have to look further than the Flames to see that...

He's going to be good. And Monahan isn't fast enough to keep up with him. It would be Bennett or more likely a team effort.

What will be interesting is how some of the wonder kids take having their ice time cut back. As they all can't be on PP1 or the first line.

Maybe they'll go with hall - McDavid - Eberle with Yak - Nuge on defense.

At no point have I ever thought that Monahan was too slow to keep up with anyone, granted, the top centers currently aren't as fast. I don't know much about McDavid's speed though.

I do see 2 potential lines starting to form, and both could potentially be used to face top lines (i.e. McDavid) for the next decade.

Gaudreau - Monahan - ???
(Bouma/Ferland/???) - Bennett - Poirer

Plus on defense, we have probably one of the smoothest skating d-man in the league in Brodie. And that Giordano is no slouch either.

Monahan is already showing to be a top 2-way center in the league, so I pinned him as probably the guy that gets to see McDavid a lot. However, Bennett and Poirer (and Ferland) all have good speed, and on the flip side, McDavid and co will have to watch the defensive side of the puck since Bennett, Gaudreau and Poirer can take a dead play and put the puck in your own net as well. (Side note: Imagine Tarasenko as one of the ??? players? That would be sweet)

It's not all about speed. Monahan plays a smart positional defensive game, as does Backlund and Stajan.

And lots of times the matchup is defence pairing versus top forwards - so Brodie and Gio versus McDavid and whoever they play with him. Brodie has speed and Gio has smarts (and decent speed).

Well... having 3 first overall draft picks and not showing any improvement is a sign of what ??? Being gifted Mcdavid is what ??? Bringing in Nichols was a good thing ... the hockey world has been pumping up this team for years and now it will be ramped up even further ... this is a team given unearned praise and entitlement .... it is going to be fun watching sportsnet and all the hockey talking heads apologize for the future failings of poor Edmonton ...
