A 25 yr old top 10 (at least) defender in the league and this is how you treat him? Oiler level mismanagement as far as I'm concerned.

Alot of people like Subban and think hes elite. But would you build your team around this guy and want him to be "the guy" guiding the young kids in the dressing room and on the ice?
I dont think I would. Sure hes a nice complimentry piece, the main piece of your core?

Nah, the Oilers would have given him a 6x6 before he proved anything.

Because Subban wants a hell of a lot more than $8.5 million on a long term deal.

Just what the heck is the deal here? Montreal being stubborn? Subban being greedy? Agent playing hardball?
Seems to me your star player, who wants to be there, shouldn't be going to arbitration. Or the ridiculous bridge contract.

It really surprised me that no club offered him a term sheet. PK is just the sort of game breaker that every team could use.
Why the Habs continue to lowball him is just beyond me. Just pay the guy what he's worth - which is $7 million or north.

I think it would be funny if before the end of the day the Arbitrator came back with the ruling on what ever dollar value before, the 2 sides had a chance to talk and try and get a deal done on their own

Because very few teams have the kind of cap space required this year. And if you are a team that does, such as us, do you give up four first rounders for him?

No one offersheeted Stamkos when he was an RFA either. I think most teams know that they will be matched and it will only result in hurt relationships.
It's one thing to piss off another GM when you think you can realistically get the player, but in the cases of Subban and Stamkos, there is no chance that the other teams don't match.

Almost no one is worth 4 first rounders. Maybe the LA Kings could do it because if you count on being a perennial finalist your first rounders arent particularly awesome but it would definitely screw any team long-term.

Players going to arbitration also can't sign offer sheets. So there's that.

I thought was changed in the new CBA. No one offered him an offer sheet as the Habs would just match it.

Exactly. We could really use a Subban on our defence. But the cost on an offer sheet would cripple the rebuild.

yes i would build a team around him, think he plays with a lot of passion and it can rub off on others (as seen in this past playoff run). he is still young and i think will mature into a more well rounded dman (less dumb penalties and more consistent in his own zone).
i understand not everyone shares that opinion. he's always been, and likely always will be, a fairly polarizing dman (like phaneuf).

I think if a team is likely going to be picking 15th or lower (as in a team that is likely going to be a playoff team in the near future), then it would be worth it.
Or a team like the Oilers that can't develop their top picks anyway.
Not worth it for us though. Definitely not worth an Eichel or McDavid lottery ticket.

If the relationship is toast now and the Habs have to move PK what do you think it would take to get him?
I would imagine something like Brodie, Poirier and Sven (or Granlund if they want a center).

It changed for team elected arbitration, and even then only for a very small window (something like Jul 5). Subban filed for arbitration. So no offer sheet could be signed.

Start with Monahan or Bennett.
Then start adding people like Brodie and Poirier.
Then add a first rounder or two.
For a guy like Subban, we'd be giving up top prospects and players, not just those in the second tier.

Basically what they'd want from us would torpedo our rebuild.
