He'll have just turned 33, so there's still a great possibility for a high-valued contract. But in order to make more than Weber in career earnings he'll likely have to earn 50M after this contract. Possible, especially with how the cap could rise, but at that point when someone needs to sign a 50M contract to only catch up to another player we're playing with hypotheticals far too much to consider him the highest paid defenseman in any stretch, in my opinion. Unless we also want to consider McDavid the highest paid forward too. :P
There's also Doughty and Karlsson, who wont be making as much during this next little stretch, did make more than Subban the last little bit and will be UFA's as 29 year olds. If we're predicting career earnings I would say those 2 have a higher likelihood of finishing ahead of KeithWeber than Subban does.

If Crosby was to sign a new contract today he would likely be highest paid in the league. Kinda tough to compare contracts from when he signed to now.

you can't compare crosby's contract to any of the top contracts handed out this summer. That was signed 6 years ago. When his contract was signed, the NHL cap was $57 million. It's almost 15 million bucks more now, after a new CBA, so it's a much different economic structure.
This summer has shown that top ~10 forwards and top ~10 dmen are now 9-11 million dollar players in the current economic structure of the league. i am certain that stamkos gets 10.5 maybe even 11 million or more when his time comes soon.

Crosby has earned just over $70M in his career to date. When his contract expires, that total will be over $162M. I don't feel too bad for him.
As for Subban, I'm surprised at the term and dollars based on everything leading up to his hearing. Great deal for him. Well done Montreal in locking him up IMO.

Habs should have forked up the money 2 years ago. Likely would have been paying in the 6-7 range. That wanted him to show and prove and he did just that and now they are paying for it.

If he played like Del Zotto for those two years, Habs fan would have strung GM up for that contract.
Habs did the right thing, now they realize it's time to pay up..

Way too much money for way too long. Subban is a guy that loses you as many games as he wins.

LOL guys that "lose you as many games as they win" don't get selected to team Canada for the freaking Olympics. I seriously doubt some of you have even seen him play based of the comments I'm reading.

Yup. Crosby would get $11-12m per for 8 years if he was RFA this summer.

I seriously doubt you have watched him play much. Subban makes as many bad plays as he does good plays. Being selected to the Olympics doesn't means jack when you don't play much. Subban was a developmental pick, hoping he would learn something for the future. He played little and didn't contribute much, but that is irrelevant to his selection. This was a pick for the future. We'll see if he ever gets another invite. If he continues his current play that won't happen. High-risk/high-reward players don't go far in tournaments like the Olympics.

Good news for Canada I guess that our "development pick" happened to be a former Norris winner. Oh well, no use arguing about it, he just signed a document indicating his worth to an NHL team so it's pretty obvious how he's valued in the hockey world at the moment. And he only had 1 team to negotiate with, imagine if he had 30...

How so? Subban is a great offensive defenseman but a horrible defensive defenseman. He's very much like Letang in Pittsburgh. He'll win you some games, but he'll lose you just as many. Let's put it to you this way. Who would you want on your team? Paul Coffey or Al MacInnis? I'll pass on Coffey and take MacInnis. Same thing goes with Subban. I'll take quite a few defenders over Subban, especially at $9 million a season. That's crazy money for a player like that.

"Horrible defensive defenseman"? Holy hyperbole batman. I might as well say he's got the offensive abilities of a young Bobby Orr.

He's definitely in the top dozen dman in the league, but I'd likely take Weber, Keith, Chara, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Suter; and then possibly McDonagh, Ekman-Larsson, and Karlsson before him.
I even think Giordano had a better regular season than Subban, but PK did have some very good games in the playoffs (although the Lightning were an abysmal opposition in the first round).
Although this is a league where Phaneuf is making 7 mill and Niskanen is making 5.75, so I can see how Subban is worth 9. The Habs had to keep him really with the backlash the fanbase would have had if anything else happened, Bergevin was really forced into a corner on this one.

Some people here think of Gio as the second coming but guess what Gio didn't make the team PK did. If PK had gotten a chance to play no doubt in my mind he would've been a big contributor, maybe we would've scored a bit more?
He is not horrible defensively. I mean seriously this is a generic thinking amongst NHL fans if the guy is an offensive stud he must be bad defensively.

Here is Therrien on his defenseman, his coach who watches him everyday.
Quote:
"He's still a threat offensively. He's still a threat on the power play. We give him different responsibilities defensively playing against good players around the League and he's shown a lot of leadership the way he's preparing himself and approaching the game. Definitely defensively he's been really, really, really good."
|
So go PK. Great deal for both sides.
