I have an American Deluxe Stratocaster HSS Amber with rosewood fret. I could part with. Cant remember the year, I think it's a 2007. I played it maybe twice.

I've been playing accoustic for a year now and have become somewhat decent. Now that I play nearly every day and have ingrained this hobby into my life, I would like to know how long until everyone upgraded their guitars? I was also thinking about buying my first electric.

1000$ is a huge budget. First of all... I highly suggest buying used... look on Kijiji or the Fender American Deluxe Strat NorthEastGoon is selling is really nice, and is pretty much the same as mine, except mine does not have the humbucker. I got mine for 1000$, and it is about 1800$ new.

Secondly... Long and Mcquade >>> Axe music. The sales people at Long and Mcquade are way more knowledgeable and don't pressure you into buying anything like they do at Axe. I go there at least once a week it seems like.

But anyways... I'm sure you can find a pretty high quality guitar on kijiji for ~500$.

In my situation, I played acoustic for a while before getting an electric too, but I still have not upgraded my acoustic, as I am more into the electric side now, so I would suggest getting an electric after a year rather than another acoustic. My first electric was an epiphone les paul special II, and a cheap traynor 15W amp. Both were very cheap, think it came to a total of 300$ for both, and they seemed to do the trick for my first electric. Can't really tell a huge difference between my cheap epiphone and alot of expensive guitars out there... but I'm not that much of an expert, and for all I know there may be a substantial difference.

I wouldn't share your budget right away. You're the only one who needs to know what you're willing to spend. You probably don't need to spend that much. Go to a store with a lot of guitars and test out a lot of them. You could end up with a guitar for around 500.00-600.00 that feels much better to YOU than the high priced beauty that looks pretty. The main goal is to play it. I'd rather spend the money saved on a good amp.

I have a friend in a band who picked up a used guitar in Chinatown (downtown LA) for 100 bucks, just becuase he liked the look of it and it was cheap. Now he regularly chooses it over all of his other, more expensive accoustics because of the way it feels and the sound is amazing. You don't necessarily have to spend a lot of money.

Depending on what you want to be playing I would recommend a Danelectro. They are selling brand new Dano '59 guitars for less than $400. Depending on what you want to play and how you want it to sound, of course. $1000 is lots of money but I would agree, buy used or buy a brand new Danelectro. Check out www.danoguitars.com

It's here: http://www.danelectro.com/

Like I said above, my U2 reissue is a dream to play, it sounds great, and it's pretty cheap.

Edit: It's not quite the same thing as what I have. My guitar was only built between 98 and 2002 or something like that.

You're very right. The one I use now is the lowest model in the line, got it for $320, but it sounds really good. I have added EMG's to it as my old pick ups weren't that great and I wanted a heavier sound, but it has an excellent neck and is very sturdy. I dropped it on the head (the strap broke when I was carrying it), and it was fine, and has been for 4 years now.

I still want a proper thru-neck construction guitar though with a Floyd (mine has no whammy).

Edit: Do you have an amp by any chance? (Towards the OP) If not I would suggest blowing half your budget on a proper Tube amp with a nice head. I don't have a tube amp, just a big one (I forget the name of the other kind) and the tube amps sound a lot better. You can also get a way better distortion with a proper head.

I'd buy a good head (Marshall, etc.) and then get a 4 speaker cabinet.

Ugh, I can't stand Floyd Rose bridges. I never ever use a whammy bar for anything. So frustrating to deal with.

Really? I want a Floyd Rose so badly! I love soloing with them.

I do see the frustration someone might have though. For me, I'd love one but they would really restrict how I play, as I change my tuning ALL the time. I go from E standard to E flat and visa versa all the time, and tuning a Floyd Rose is much harder as you need to lock the strings in.

I was the opposite, I started with electric. I wasn't interested in strumming, I am still not very good at it. The first thing I tried to learn were metal guitar solos and jazz pieces because that's what interested me.

Consequentely I'm totally a self taught lead/improvisational player only.

Give me an acoustic and a sheet of tabs for a song to sing along to at the campfire and I'll be totally lost, don't even know anything outside basic chord names, even though I discovered many. I play mostly around the 7th-14th frets with my centre line around the 12th fret most of the time. I wouldn't know what to do if you ask me to play a specific chord.

People always say I'm backwards that way.

It's pretty impractical to want to change the tuning of the guitar by a half step if you're using a floating bridge.

Well, not really. My secret is that I don't lock in the low E and A strings (since they share a locking nut). These strings are the thickest and have the most tension and effect on the entire tremello and so if it goes a bit out of tune, these strings can just be adjusted at the pegs and usually fixes the whole thing.

There are 3 locking nuts at the top right? Don't lock the E & A one. The other thinner strings have less tension and effect on the tilt of the floating bridge and can be easily tuned/detuned from the fine tuners on the bridge.

I have two guitars with them, I never use them really aside from when I want to warble out some 'Lenny'. I find it's a hassle with having to match heavier gauge strings with heavy strong springs or else the whammy is waaaay too sensitive...plus, have you ever tried to mute or mute pick strings with a floating bridge! Yikes! Getting proper intonation right is even harder. since you have distance and levering height. Pinch harmonics are hard to pinpoint.

I have no friends who are interested in music. That sucks. I'm always playing by myself to to my own backing tracks and therefore I am not improving or learning anything new because of these bad habits.

Any amateur CP musicians want to get together and try to learn some stuff or jam?

You like metal?

I'm the same, none of my friends have any musical abilities, and the ones that do like terrible indy music which incorporates like 4 power chords. w00t w00t

After playing Rhythm guitar for so long and getting bored of it, I now want to learn solely hardish songs which only have melodies and patterns where I have to move my fingers more.

If you watch Kijiji like a hawk, some gems can be found assuming you know what to look for.

Axe has some poor sales reps, L&M has some poor sales reps, Guitarworks has some poor sales reps, Mother's has some poor sales reps, etc. Every guitar store has some poor sales reps and some good ones. Research any models you might be interested in before you go to a guitar shop instead of relying on the sales person to guide you. Go to L&M or Axe, pick a few guitars off the wall, plug em in and play. There is little need to talk to a sales person when you're guitar shopping.

Disregard the brand or the price. Focus on the feel of the guitar since it's the most important thing. Does it feel good in your hands? Does it feel balanced when you play it? Do you like the neck profile? etc. Not every cheap guitar is going to play really well, and not every $2k Gibson is going to play really well. Fancy hardware and pickups are nice, but those can all be swapped out later. Nuts, bridges, machine heads, etc are all relatively inexpensive to replace and you can do that yourself. If the guitar doesn't feel right in your hands there is a good chance it may never feel right in your hands.

Edit: Stay away from licensed Floyd Roses. LFR's tend to be junk
