That's how I understand it. When you connect the drive, it needs to be formatted and (from what I have read) will only work with your PVR. You can't unplug the drive and view those programs on your computer or vice versa. I believe that there's some encryption that prevents you from doing so.
So yeah, back up that... ummm... collection somewhere else if you're planning on using that drive for your PVR. Of course, if you have a PS3 or Xbox, you can keep your Sopranos and other stuff on your computer and stream it to your TV. Not that I'd know. Just sayin'. In theory. Hypothetically. It could be done.

they have lots of 'velocity' ones in the clearance section, I'd go with that.

You should be looking for external enclosures, a HDD Caddy is different than what you need here.
I think this is the one that came with that bundle.

So I'm looking at this hard drive (low noise/heat/power):

Any suggestions?

That is a great choice to go with. It's quieter than the regular 7200RPM drives, which is a good thing.

Hey all,
I just got an offer in the mail from shaw - they are offering me the 500GB external expander for $99.00 plus tax. Not the best deal going, but...
I don't need it, since I have already upgraded mine and have an expander.
If someone here wants to take the deal instead, I'd be happy to facilitate the order.

Anyone know of good deals out there for Shaw HD PVRs - specifically the old Motorola Boxes? Can they be purchased for dirt cheap? Perhaps a refurbished model?
Do you think Shaw would give me a refurbished model if I get a pricier cable package?

Do you know why you received the offer? Is there an offer code that could be passed on?
Any details you could post would be appreciated so if anyone wanted to call Shaw and try to negotiate the same offer.
One more thing... I assume you are in the Calgary area?

Says I received the offer because I am a loyal and valuable customer... LOL
No offer code, just a form letter. Could possibly call Shaw and ask if they will honor it, I can't imagine why they wouldn't - I'm really not that special!
I am in the Calgary area, could meet at the Shaw HQ on a Friday to make the purchase and transaction taco...

That just looked like a USB cable. Look at the ends.
That drive would do though right? I would be compatible?
Anyone?...I would like to purchase this thing soon, but I want to make sure it's compatible. I'm also pretty sure that was not an eSata cable that was included. I would rather be wrong on that so I don't have to spend another $18 though.

I think that, as far as compatibility goes, all you need is a drive that isn't more than 1 TB and with an eSATA connection. I can only assume that this one would work for you.
The cable also looks like the right one. I'd still make sure that they have a return policy. I know that they're an online store, but you still want to be able to change it if you have to.

Thanks for the info.
The cable I noted as an extra or the one that comes with the drive?

Does anyone know if the drive I noted above will work for sure and if the extra cable I noted is needed?
Thanks.
