So, who's in? Like I say I will brainstorm a location and we can just set a time that works for some people (it won't work for everyone of course, but if we have one successful tasting, there could be more to follow!)
I am in, would need to establish some guidelines on how much to spend. Don't want someone bringing 150$ bottles and another guy bringing cheap Johnny Walker.

I would be interested in trying out some different bottles of scotch. I probably have two buddies who would be very interested in joining as well.

My Islay Scotch wish list. Not that I see myself spending this much per bottle, but I'd love to taste each and every one of these one day.

Japan is big into Scotch whiskey. Suntory owns quite a few distilleries in Scotland already and they are quick learners.

Picked up some of this at the duty free in Tokyo this weekend. Love the 12 year so looking forward to cracking this open.

I drink this on occasion. Good stuff. I also enjoyed Yamazaki. It was Japanese whiskey that started my foray into real scotch.

I had a Welsh whiskey not too long ago that was fantastic.

Where can you find some of this Japanese stuff? I'd love to give it a try.

I think I've seen Yamazaki 12 and 18 at Coop liquor locations. I don't recall ever seeing it at a Crowfoot liquor, but I could be wrong. There's also a liquor store in the strip mall by the Edgemont Superstore I've seen it in.

However, for a slam dunk hit, the NE T&T mall has a liquor store which will likely have it. Unfortunately though, I do not know of any place that sells Hibiki in Calgary. Just Yamazaki. My Hibiki also came from a duty free in Japan.

Quick searching for Canadian online sales and not having much luck. The other sites don't seem to ship it to Canada.

Beginning to think I should have bought more.....

Price isn't the issue with Hibiki. It's a damn good deal IMO. The biggest issue I believe is that you cannot buy it in Calgary even if you had the money. I haven't seen the 12 or 17 here. Yamazaki isn't common, but not super difficult to find.

Use liquorconnect.com to find the closest place that sells it.

Just tried. Nothing shows up in the system for Hibiki.

Yamazaki does show up though.

If nothing show up it isn't available in an Alberta liquor store.

So I have a buddy who is going to Cancun. What should I get him to pick up there that either is a really good price, or not readily available in Calgary? Preferably Scotch but would take suggestions for Rum or Tequila.

The best bang for your buck in duty free from my experience (depending on the country) is JW Platinum. You can usually save about $40-60 a bottle depending on the promo they have.

I never see a great price saving on single malts. If anything all you see a the travellers editions of scotches that you can't buy in regular liquor stores. Can't really recommend any of those as I haven't tried them but if you have a favorite brand you are pretty safe trying a bottle.

I'll second that. Just have a look at prices here first. I've found some of the duty frees vary wildly on JW Platinum, but yeah usually you can save around $50.

The Ballantine's exclusive to duty free (Can't remember the year, but it's usually $40 a bottle) as surprisingly fantastic, especially for the price.

YYC Duty Free prices suck big time. A few times, I noticed some spirits priced higher than they are in local stores and that's after the GST.

The best prices on Scotch in the world are actually in US online stores, especially in the states with no or low state taxes. The differences with our pricing of the same bottles are incredible sometimes.
