http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich

A sandwich is a food item typically consisting of two pieces of leavenedbread between which are laid one or more layers of meat, vegetable, cheese, together with optional or traditionally provided condiments, sauces, and other accompaniments. The bread is used as is, lightly buttered, or covered in a flavoured oil to enhance flavour and texture.

I think the presence of a levening agent (like yeast) is more important than the number of slices involved. Wraps made with pitas are sandwiches, those made with tortillas are not.

Yes I too recall the Sandwich Appreciation Club. I never did join--I don't know why, I love sandwiches--but contemplated it several times. Who knew it was such a haven for Flames fans.

Pitas aren't levend though. That's what makes them a pita.

The Pitas at Opa are leavened.

Anti-semitism rears its ugly head again. "There'll be no Passover at Opa this year, kids!"

From Wikipedia:

"Sandwich Controversy

As pitas are envelopes of bread, any dish made containing pitas may be loosely considered a sandwich. This classification has caused bickering in online and other communities; the sandwichness of pita dishes such as gyros remains unclear at this moment. In fact, the unleavened nature of the pita has introduced a whole new level to the debate."

I would then argue that Opa does not use real pitas.

Well, Wikipedia isn't always right. It also says that pitas contain yeast, and that yeast is a leavening agent. Just look for pita recipes on the internet: they all contain yeast. Or try baking them yourself... you'll see them rise in the oven -- that's leavening.
