In a perfect world they would never.
However, their world is not perfect and they still have Howard eating up $5.2 million cap space for 3 more seasons with Mrazek and RFA (with arb rights) and probably looking for starter money.
A cap team like the Wings can't afford to pay their goaltending tandem $10~ million per season, and Howard is not going to be easy to unload.
If they can get Mrazek to sign a bridge deal then great, but he might not want to do that and if they don't get something done soon it will be easy for a team to come in and offer sheet Mrazek to a starter deal.
Might be better to just deal him for a good return and ride out Howard's contract while they continue to develop Coreau, who has been solid in the AHL for a couple seasons now.

Apparently, he was injured last year and finally put his tools together this year.
8 secondary assists out of 23, which is pretty good. He has a higher primary points/game than Brett Howden (0.607 vs 0.603), good for 9th among 2016 eligible forwards in the WHL. I can't find his shooting % since the WHL doesn't seem to track shots.
His name doesn't scream hockey superstar though so I'd be a little wary.

Hmm his stats remind me of Hunter Smith. I'm not familiar with his game but if hehas a mean streak and can skate I'd take a shot in the 4th or trade back in the 3rda bit. Not sure I think he should be taken #65 with so many ? marks.
The thing about big guys like that is you can convert them into very effective bottom 6 players if it doesn't work out, Flames said as much when we acquired Colborne. Hopefully we find the next Lucic in one of these guys though.

I still really, really want Brinson Pasichnuk. 65 pts in 52 games in the AJHL as a D-man. Apparently he plays with a pretty mean edge too.
If we don't land him,, and someone else does, I'm going to be very disappoint.

Interesting.
More impressive draft year numbers than both Parayko and Hickey who have looked good since they've been picked out of the AJHL.
Would love to see some more about him, seems like the perfect pick for our 4th rounder.
Edit: The more I read about him the more I am on board. Only 5'11 but is heavy already at 200lbs, and according to some on hfboards is a good enough skater.
Top scoring d-man in the AJHL, very impressive for a draft year player. Plus Has over 130 penalty minutes and seems to have a tendency to get into a scrap (6 fights this year).
Sign me up.

I looked him up to see what kind of player he is. He's the son of former Jet Pat Elynuik who wasn't known for his physical play but could score. Hudson has grown 3 inches (6' 5" now) since his first WHL game and needs to put on some muscle. Could be worth taking a flyer on.

I've seen him posted at 6' and 185-195 lbs. The only posting I saw of him was at 5'10" when he was 16-17.

When I was digging for information about him I saw on his twitter that when one of the draft sites asked him to confirm his height and weight he said 5"10.5" and 200 lbs

Eetu Tuulola is a big skilled natural RW that played very well for Finland at the U-18s that the Flames could snage with one of their 2nds as well.

Would his 19th overall ranking of international players place him in the 2nd - feels more like that would land you in the 3rd/4th round.

Flames 2nd round pick(35th OA):
Alex DeBrincat - RW - 5'7, 160lbs, shoots R
Basically a RW version of Johnny if he pans out. A lot of people thought he was just the benefactor of being on McDavid and Strome's line, but even without them his point totals have been extremely high:
With McDavid/Strome: 68gp, 51g - 53a.
Without: 60gp, 51g - 50a.
Florida's 2nd round pick(53rd OA):
Taylor Raddysh - RW - 6'1, 200lbs, shoots R
Another right-winger, this time a power forward prospect. Goes to the dirty areas and plays very physical. Teammate of DeBrincat and the two happen to have very good chemistry together. Defensive zone play could use improvement, but that can be taught. Hard shot, good o-zone reads . Also had a huge pt increase this season (27 last season to 73 this season)
Dallas' 2nd round pick(55th OA):
Sean Day - LD - 6'2, 220lbs, shoots L
How the mighty are fallen. Exceptional status guy seems to have many scouts sour on him, but in the late 2nd I think I would take a stab at him if he's available. All the tools are there except for consistency and effort.
Flames 3rd round pick(65th OA):
Tim Gettinger - LW - 6'5, 205lbs, shoots L
Decent mobility for his size. Project powerforward. Plays in all situations and is relied upon defensively. Makes the smart plays.
Flames 4th round pick(95th OA):
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny!
Ok, there's going to be some comically exaggerated hype for whoever we pick because of Johnny and Brodie. Hopefully it doesn't screw with this guy's head.
Since we've had a homerun forward and a homerun defender, why not take a stab at a homerun goalie?
Stephen Dhillon - G - 6'4, 181lbs, catches L
Backup for the Niagara Icedogs. Played behind Nedelejkovic, but actually enjoyed a lot of starts and had better numbers (especially after some awful starts last year).
Dhillon: 24gp, 2.69 GAA, .908 sv%, 11-6-4
Nedelejkovic: 30gp, 2.72 GAA, .907 sv%, 15-13-2
The rest is kind of a crapshoot.

Yeah probably. But I can see the Flames make a jump with the FLA or Dallas' pick for a player like Tuulola. If the Flames had another 3rd round pick I'd put him there but with 3 picks in round 2 they could make a reach.

Draft Analyst does a mock draft of the 2nd round. Again his player descriptions are quite solid for those looking to read up and inform themselves about the types of players that we could be looking at in the 2nd or 3rd.

Anyone know much about Givani Smith? ISS has him at 109 but I think he might be a good pick at 53, 55 or even 65. Thoughts?

2016 NHL Draft - Beyond Round 1.
Id even like to pick up Koivula in the later rounds.
Edit: Also, change Keller to Brown and you've got me sold.
I'd save 125 for Pasichnuk, however.

If we can just get Thompson I'll be elated. This guy's one-timer is probably second in the draft after Laine. Hard and accurate, not as lightning-quick as PL obviously but he's got the frame of a young Jankowski, lots of physical development to go. The rest of his game is a WIP but keep in mind he's a 17 year old in a very good conference, in a 20-24 typical age league.
