One problem I have with the black is I just don't think it suits this current team like it did the 03-06 era (can 4 years be an era?) ones. That was a hard hitting, strong defence, low scoring, lunch pail crew, and all the black and red suited a mean, physically intimidating team like that.
This current team is young, fast, and flashy. All the black seems out of place for the style we play IMO. The red/yellow combination (vintage unis or not, I just mean the colour scheme itself) is so much flashier, it'd be a better fit on this young, free-wheeling version of the Flames.

A part of what makes the retros cool is that they are rarely used. If we made them the primary, they'll grow old pretty fast.

The Flames current jerseys are beautiful, and I've been a huge fan since the day I first saw them.

I didn't like the horsehead jersey, but I certainly didn't mind it as a shoulder patch.
Way better than the lame attempt Alberta and Canada flags. Had they kept that patch, I probably wouldn't even care about a new jersey.

I disagree. The piping/striping on the jersey makes it look terrible. There are random stripes all over that are just cut off or end suddenly. For example, along the sides, there's this yellow/white striping that leads into a black arch that goes up into the armpits and then down into the sleeves. But the yellow/white striping gets cut off by the black arch, then the arch goes down the sleeve just ends. It just gets cut off. What? Why?
And then the yellow and white striping across the bottom. Again, it's randomly cut off again by the rest of the striping that goes up the side. It looks very sloppy, IMO. That's before you take into account the flags, which still look out of place. The entire thing needs to be scrapped.
It's too bad they decided to crap the bed with the third jerseys too. The only redeeming thing about the new thirds is the shoulder patch.

Yes, yes, yes please bring back the 2004 jerseys somehow! No more weird stripes, piping, pit stains or flags anywhere. Just a simple strong red, and black with minimal white/yellow highlights.
If not, then at the very least, the Flames desperately need a new redesign, and do something like what the Stars did a few years ago for example.

If I had photoshop skills I would do this, but...
Take our current thirds, remove the black shoulder patch, replace wordmark with regular flaming C, and remove dumb stripes from pants and bang, beautiful jersey.

This. And definitely change the jersey template from the western style jersey with the low neckline to our standard jersey with the laces.

My Flames jersey rankings:
1. The original: classic, timeless, pretty much perfect.
2. The 2004 era: an excellent upgraded jersey, particularly the red base. My favorite Iginla era jersey. Acceptable integration of black. Would be happy to see this jersey return.
3. The present third jersey. It is growing on me. Not a fan of the logo but the color scheme is a significant improvement on the present jersey.
4. The present jersey. The piping and the use of black pants suck. Way too busy. The home red is much better than the away white but I still hate the piping and black pants.
5. The pedestal jersey. Really bad but might be cool some day as an obsure retro collectible thing.
6. The outdoor jersey: ugly, inauthentic historicism, but better than the . . .
7. Horsehead jersey. The most pitiful excuse ever for a Calgary Flames jersey.

In 1980 the Flames would rise from Atlanta and move north to Calgary.
Minor changes were made to the jersey but with a new "Flaming C" logo. The colour of the logo changed depending on which jersey was being worn; on the road jersey the logo was red, and the home jersey logo was white. The Flames grew attached to these jerseys and they[] remained basically the same for 15 seasons.
|
15 seasons we stuck to a single jersey. Because it was perfect. We've slowly been finding our way back there for the last 20.
New Arena + Old Jersey = Dynasty

My comments:
Black was Ron Bremner creation along with "warm hot dogs, cold beer, people wil come" school of marketing. Its was to be able to sell a black t shirt or hat. BFTSOB. The black jersey was an extension of that, obviously. Had it kept the snot horse to the shoulders, that would've been fine as a third jersey and the black should of stayed out of the primary set.
Then, of course, the Flames ditched the red jersey completely for a couple years in the early 2000's, and the black abomination was a primary road, with the white home jersey being the original design, and the 2004 red was the same pattern.
The problem with the 2004 jersey I had, was the switch after about a month, to white letters, throwing off the entire design of the jersey. Black numbers and black C, black letters....looked complete. As soon as they swtiched to white letters the jersey looked unbalanced. Really, who cares about reading the name on the back, with the numbers right there? 80 year olds who don't want to read a program, and broadcasters who want to complain about something?
I still see the odd one with black letters, and full props to those people. I got a jersey day 1 (an authentic) in 2004, and then the wife got an Iginla with the white letters, and wish I would have a name and number in black.
On the post 2005 set, the flags are something the owners really wanted, but wanted to use a maple leaf and the Alberta coat of arms, but due to flag rules, they had to use the full flags, not a part of them. The redesign with the side stripes looks actually not bad when worn with pants, but overkill for just a jersey. That said, I'd rather have that than the practice jersey design that some teams adopted when everything changed, such as the Leafs and the Oilers, with minimal stripes and a logo slapped onto what looked like a beer league blank jersey.
The other unique uniform feature the first year was the sock stripes that didn't meet at the back...Tampa was the only other team that used that design.
I assume at some point the redesign will get rid of some of the stripes. Who knows if the flags stay; that was a pretty key point for the owners back when. A cleaner design for sure.
The new third was a bit of a let down with the wordmark. The best thing from that is the updated font for the number and name; the ones on the other sets are still the same font and numbers as were on the 1997 Horsehead jersey. Haven't really seen too much around the third logo as far as merchandise so who knows.
Of course, NHL jersey rules state that changes have to be approved almost a year before you see anything. So changes can't happen that quick. Not quite sure if those thirds had Burke's influence, but I believe they would've been approved before he got here. Recall, Burke was the one that added orange as a more prominent color with the Ducks back when.
Also, Ken King had a mystery jersey that he was thinking of releasing as a third, approved by the league, but then he pulled it back...that was circa 2008 or so, but its not clear whether the current 3rd was basically that jersey.
So after all that, if the Flames were to do a redesign, IMO:
- Updated home and road set, removal of all black except maybe, maybe, a thin trim around the name or numbers....but red pants for both sets. Red C, and White C. More stylized version of the 80's jersey, but not to be confused with it. Same font for name and number as the current third.
-The retros..used very sparingly. Even the whites, though that would be asking too much.
-Current third jersey, or even reverse it, black with red, as opposed to red with black. Turn the secondary shoulder "CF" into the logo on the front, with the "C" on the shoulders.

I'm not disagreeing with the opinion that the old jerseys were the best, but I'd say that keeping the jerseys the same for that long back then was pretty standard for most teams since merchandising wasn't as big a thing back then. These days jerseys are much more of a product to be sold to your fanbase, and if you change that product more often then you generate more sales.

I agree. Those horsehead jerseys were atrocious, but they looked cool as a shoulder patch. Much better than the flags. Why not add silver trim around the logo and stripes? That may work.

One thing I don't get or agree with is when people say "leave the past in the past". Just like the Canadiens, Hawks, Wings, Bruins, Flyers, St.Louis, Buffalo, etc etc?
