I think you're right about that. It's also about power structures in society, or class-division put another way. Trans rights, and more generally LGBTQ+ rights, are moving forward quickly (and I approve greatly). But larger societal structures largely remain unchanged - the poor largely stay poor, the disadvantaged largely remain disadvantaged.

Most people criticizing Chapelle right now haven't watched The Closer. He doesn't attack anyone. He makes some jokes and explains his views. I am not part of the trans community so maybe I am not the best judge of what is offensive to that group. The "beyond #####" joke was hilarious. If that is offensive, then the world has truly gone to ####.

It was less funny than most of his other specials but he is using his voice to criticize the cancel culture, in what he perceives as "saving comedy" as an art. He has been using his voice and whatever little power he has right now to stand up for a lot of things (George Floyd, inequality).

There is no room for nuance and context in comedy, but that is neither a new phenomenon nor revelation.

I can't quite tell if this will be as crazy as season 1, or if it's a desperate attempt to capitalize, and will be watered down drama. Will maybe wait for reviews on this one.

We need to build a wall. I think if we're articulate about it we can even con America into paying for it....but we need to build a wall....

Before that madness has a chance to migrate North...

Comedy is also a reflection on what those comics believe and observe, although told to us in a humorous way.
Too often hate speech in comedy attempts to get covered by the generic "don't take it seriously it's just a joke" No. It's not always just a joke, and comedy shouldn't be a field where there is always a free pass to say what you want. Times are changing, comedy has to change along with it, and intelligent comics should be able to do so.
His main point is as a society we become so reactionary. He made the point of DaBaby who killed a man in a Walmart and it didn't hinder his career but a remark about AIDS and LGBTQ had major repercussions. I didn't find any of his jokes coming across like LGBTQ are less human than others or are less deserving of anything than others. They all seemed to be of the air that making these jokes would illicit such a major backlash compared to if he made racial or other taboo subject jokes, because of the outrage culture we live in with social media. And like lightning to a lightning rod the LGBTQ community and its defenders immediately made his point.

Now if people want to say his special for the most part was unfunny and not his best work. I fully agree. But it wasn't any more racy than anything that he's done for the last 20+ years. And tame in my mind compared to many other comedians. I'd suggest if someone has a light stomach for that kind of stuff then maybe just avoid standup comedy altogether.

With comedy, the standard and pithy advice is to punch up and not down. The obvious question is who gets to decide what’s up and what’s down. Even assuming you can reach any sort of consensus that white men are at the top, that leaves dozens of variations of sex, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, class, disability, etc to sort themselves into a privilege stack. Good luck with that.

And that’s not even getting into recognizing that one of the functions of comedy is to transgress taboos and consensus, to say things people are uncomfortable saying in polite society.

Tiger King wasn't contrived which was what was crazy about the original. This second "season" looks like a complete cash grab. You know they're going to be playing it up for the cameras. There's nothing left to see - it'll just be dumb.

Exactly.

It was supposed to be a documentary about Private Exotic pet ownership and zoos in America and it just....it devolved hard from there.

I still chuckle at time about people who decry Tiger King as having 'missed the point.'

Uh no...you missed the point. It was supposed to be about 'Thing A' and then all bets were off...

I really really wish Netflix put some of this extra cash into Mindhunter. How could they not move it along when it did so well and they were building up to something good. Excellent story telling, and characters. And I don't even like fiction. Instead, Stranger Things, which was cute for half a second gets more money for more meh.

Haha... ugh, "You" is my guilty pleasure.

And I'm enjoying the hell out of season 3. Each season just gets even more ridiculous, and I'm here for it.

It's like present day Dexter for millennials, if his obsession revolved around hot women and the writer let all their inambitions go. There's so much about it that's beyond believability, and yet that's half of its appeal.

Must say, my favourite recurring character is the cage.

Tiger King was like an onion and as you peeled the layers away it just got crazier and crazier. I cant even imagine what that must have been like for the filmmakers.

"Is this real life? WTF is happening here?"

One day that film crew is going to make a 'The Making of Tiger King' documentary that is going to be mandatory showing for film schools.

"We started with an idea...and then #### got weird....and we basically just sat back and let it unfold...."

It's not Netflix saying no to Mindhunter, it's David Fincher

Pay him more than. Either he's a genius and has a better idea(s) to not go through with another season, but it's hard to fathom that he built something and will abandon it so easily. Odd really.

Finished watching Hotel Mumbai, and it appears to be an Australian flick about the terrorist hijackings in India years ago, but it was a great movie. Shocked I didn't hear about this movie but for anyone who likes movies based on a true story it was a must watch. And it didn't have the white saviour situation with most Hollywood flicks have when interacting with other cultures. 5/5 stars really.
