How often/much does the city look at "best practices" from other cities? I'm sure (I hope!) this is done to a certain extent, but learning from successes (and failures) of other cities has to be vital to future development.
I'm just back from a 4 day stint in Seattle and was so impressed of the biking trails and lanes and how bikers and drivers seem to have the utmost respect for each other.
As well, yet another city featuring double and triple "decker" highways to help alleviate traffic congestion.
Guess I'm always disappointed with the reactionary approach to things rather than being proactive.
(Highway 8 specifically comes to mind (read Ric McIvor's comments on traffic and safety issues), but that's more of a provincial issue.)

I hope you're not pointing to the Alaskan Way Viaduct as an example of a best practice. It's being replaced by a tunnel. This should result in substantial improvement to Seattle's waterfront.

This is not a best practice. This is just another example of an American city turning it's back to the waterfront and all kinds of cities are trying to undo these terrible decisions. We narrowly escaped this type of highway here.

We have a waterfront?
All kidding aside, I think you and Seb missed the OP's original point and attacked an item in the post simply to cause distraction. Might have been a bad example of best practices, however, the OP question still stands.

That was not my intent. I have confidence that I can point out that what the OP may have seen as a best practice is in fact not, without causing Bunk to miss the question.
And while we don't have an oceanfront, we do have a river... from which most of downtown would have been cut off had Calgary gone ahead with the downtown penetrator proposal.

But we would have a road called the downtown penatrator.

We could always re-name Bow Trail.

Thanks Kavy.
I definitely wasn't referring to that aspect and location of the highway and to implement such a thing such as by the bow.
The point is more about looking what other cities are doing - what is working, what isn't. As well, being proactive rather than reactive to the issues we face. Like Kavy said, might not necessarily have been the best example to argue my point.

Seattle also has some pretty awesome traffic improvements on the I-5. Dedicated bi-directional HOV highway that goes above below and in-between the other 2 sets of lanes. Probably the triple decker sections the poster was referring to. Along with dedicated HOV exits, Variable speed limits, and ramp metering there are lots of things to look at that could be implemented in the short and long term along deerfoot.
Ramp Metering and Variable speed limits would help a lot on deerfoot and would be relatively cheap to implement although that is the provinces scope and not the cities.

What is the Mayor and the police dept's plan for stores price gouging that is beyond being reasonable?
I realize this is far down the priority list but in due time they should severely fine those stores.
It is awful that people are being preyed on like this.
Everyone that is protecting and aiding our citizens is doing a fantastic job.

Mac's, and small convenience stores and gas stations with water even bread and basics.
There is a face book site dedicated to it now.

I don't know if the Mayor has any power over potential price gouging. That's strictly a police matter.
