In The Red Queen - a book I highly recommend, by the way - the author discusses how this type of scenario is an evolutionary strategy for women. It makes sense, from a strictly functional perspective, to seek 2 different kinds of men: one is the life partner, who is a reliable sort who can be depended upon not to abandon her and/or the children; the other is the sexual partner, who is not particularly reliable, but who perceived as having the potential to father better children.
Obviously a good deal for the woman if she can get it, and he goes into detail of how this strategy evolved in terms of game theory, where the average outcome for this type of scenario works out positively in the long run for a sizable minority of the female population. However, with paternity tests no doubt becoming easier and easier to have done as time goes on, I think there will be huge societal consequences when it becomes evident just how widespread and pervasive this type of situation really is.

Interesting. Although I'd have to say I don't think it's necessarily them picking a man on the side based on reasons of being able to produce better children, as opposed to wanting the guy on the side who is their ideal "fantasy" man, hence her getting knocked up by a guy in a band.

Well the "fantasy" man is the biological equivalent of the alpha male, flashy with a big mane, confident, physically active with displays of stamina, can sing a good song to lure a mate from long distance, good at attracting other female mates, etc. Unfortunately, this kind of male is also not mature and not suitable father material because of these exact same traits.
Here's my question, and possibly why it made my "BS detector" go off.... why would a single guy just go out and get himself a vasectamy? The only remotely possible idea is the guy hates condoms so much that he'd rather get snipped than use one ever again, but then he ends up using them anyways.
I agree with you in doubting the validity of the story, but not the the vasectomy reason. He may already have kids, assuming he's around the same age as her (with her biological ticking clock), he'd probably be in his late 30s. He may well have already fathered children at that point in his life.
I smelled BS when he got the letter from the lawyer. I have a friend who wanted to get a similar "cease and desist or I'll sue you" letter (not for a woman claiming to be carrying his child). It is NOT cheap to get a letter like that.
So I have to question why someone would not simply say "I got a vasectomy, call me in 9 months and we'll do a paternity test if you don't believe me" rather that paying a lot of money for lawyers and spending a lot of time going around getting all the paperwork BEFORE even telling her about the vasectomy. Why? So he got get a bunch of juveniles on the Internet stroking his ego by telling him about how much he "pwned" her? I don't buy it.

I read an interesting article once about the evolutionary history of human sexual promiscuity. The article discussed factors going back to when humans were nomadic tribesmen. The author argued that it was more likely, natural even, for men than women to seek out multiple partners. In mankind's early years there was a strong imperative in men to spread their seed far and wide to propagate the species and ensure its survival. As a result, the male who fertilized the most females spread his genetics farther and wider than a male with a low sex drive who only fertilized one or two females. The result, according to the author, was that men evolved with a genetic inclination towards promiscuity.
Women on the other hand bore the primary responsibility for raising all those little cave kids. Women, therefore, looked for a more loyal, monogamous type male for a partner as they wanted/needed the support and dependability of such males to help them provide for and raise the cave kids. As a result, women have evolved with a genetic tendency towards monogamy and stability in their relationships with men.
Basically, according to the author, men have a primal tendency towards promiscuity as their instinctive way to propagate the species, which by its very nature has a greater tendency to be passed along genetically. However, women's primal tendency for propagating the species is the complete opposite ... monogamous, stable, dependable, long term relationships.
Thus, the age old struggle between men and women can be traced back to the very origin of our species and is a primal and basic part of our very nature. At least that was the thesis of the guy I read. It was a few years ago so I forget who he was, but it was an article in archeology magazine I sometimes buy and as I recall he was an anthropologist. I thought it was an interesting theory at least. It would be interesting to see some guy plead "I couldn't help it Your Honour, I'm genetically programmed to be a slut and boink bar maids" as his defense in a divorce case.

No way. They should send nurses out to collect the specimen in the privacy of your home, just like insurance companies send nurses for insurance policy exams. Buxom nurses. In nylons. And stilettos.
Depending on the method of collection, said nurses would have to be very careful when harvesting the specimens to prevent cross-contamination......I say this because my wife is an RN, and if I'm not mistaken yours is, too
Without getting into the gory details, I'm walking, talking proof that one is not rendered sterile for a looonnng time after a vasectomy. My wife and I are expecting number four in the summer......very surprising number four.
Then again, perhaps I should insist on the paternity test.

Out of curiosity, how long after the vasectomy were you still shooting live bullets? I was given the all-clear after a month as far as I recall.
And yes, my wife is also an RN, and I know what you mean about cross-contamination.

To be honest, I'm not sure. The guy that clipped me said you're good to go after 30-50 ejaculations, but my wife is presently in a family way so I haven't bothered to bring a sample in.
