I'm assuming you mean investments not divestments, but no I don't believe Cdn pipe has invested directly in rail companies. Maybe joint ventures or smthing you're thinking of?

A pipeline company would have a hard time convincing their shareholders to take their hard earned after tax earnings and investing directly into a railroad company's equity ie. buying stakes in railroads. Shareholders can do that on their own accord.

Tho I'd imagine industry fundamentals are somewhat similar between the two, if not very similar

The only rail that we should use to transport oil to the coast are rail guns.

I think I'm onto something with this idea.

Haha, yes that was what I meant.

Well, okay, we are moving just into some conversations where I played a very ancillary part, but I think some of the pipeline companies actually consider themselves as "energy transportation companies."

They are not just transportation companies, TransCanada owns several generating plants, including nuclear and solar. They are energy companies.

Notley betrayed her supporters because it was the right thing to do. Trudeau could, and should, do the same. I'm always more concerned with getting the right outcomes than holding people to the dumb things they might have said.

To say that a moratorium is required is to say that there is no safe way to ship oil. It's vastly presumptuous to say that technology does not exist to do so - government doesn't even know what technology might already exist that hasn't been made public yet.

Set a safety standard, make companies live up to that standard, but don't say that there's nothing that can be done because, quite frankly, that's insulting to the engineers and scientists whose job it is to find solutions.

Layoffs coming at Nexen across all business units in the next month or so. Will be significant but not as drastic as last March.

^^ they haven't stopped laying off since last March either. It's just been a slow trickle here and there. And now another big tranche looming, I guess.

Sounds great until I realized that a 50% jump would only bring it to $45/barrel...

Today's gains were nice, but I think we're in for at least one more dip into the 20's here soon. US inventories rose 7.8M barrels versus an estimate of +4.0M this week. Refinery turnaround season isn't far away and I think it'll smack us hard in the face.

This is complete BS. CSL is largely dry bulk self loaders. Not a big oil player at all.

It was strange to see USO drop right at 8:30 when inventories were released, then bounce to new highs ten minutes later with a Fed clarification. It's manic. I guess the Fed is less likely to raise rates in March now so USD went way down which I understand is the main reason for the bump in oil today. And the Russia/Opec meeting is back on. I think chains are being yanked. We're still miles away from an uptrend.

Trudeau was in town for the past day and a half and met with some of the big players in the energy sector. Sounds like he was well received and sounds somewhat encouraging: http://calgaryherald.com/business/en...industry-execs

A bit brief of a meeting, but positive nonetheless. Glad Steve Williams didn't come out of there fuming at least.
