I can't believe I managed to do two and a half weeks in Europe without even having to worry about making a pick!

In the category EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI the Rockin' Ribbits select one of our favourite songwriters, a man who transcends time and generations, a singer, a great composer.

PAUL SIMON!

Starting his musical career in 1957, becoming a legend in the 60s with his musical partner Art Garfunkle, embarking on a solo career in the 70s, releasing one of the greatest albums of all time featuring the incredible Ladysmith Black Mambazo and still recording greatness in the 21st century, Paul Simon is truly one of the greatest musicians still alive and kicking.

For our Canadian content, we would have loved to go with someone like Matt Good, but alas, he was snapped up many rounds ago, as he should of been although I hear Matt Good is a real ***hole!

From the East Coast a man who's been roaming the country for many years: JOEL PLASKETT!

The first time I ever heard him I was hooked.

Kermitology eliminates one of my songwriter choices! My strategy is working!

GREAT PICK! Paul Simon is awesome.

I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and recorded. Absolute magic. Strange that I post one of the songs they recorded that Simon didn't actually write, but it's so beautiful.

My Dad used to sing me to sleep with Bridge Over Troubled Water when I was very little. There is an emotional attachment to that song for me as a result. It gets me every time.

In the USA East of Mississippi category, I would like to select Steely Dan.

Steely Dan is a Grammy-Award winning Americanjazz fusion/rock band centered on core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. The band's peak of popularity was in the 1970s, when it released seven albums that blended elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B, and pop. Their music is characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies, literate and sometimes obscure or ambiguous lyrics filled with dark sarcasm, and their adroit musicianship and studio perfectionism.
The group toured from 1972 to 1974, but in 1975 became a purely studio-based act. They disbanded in 1981, but have since reunited. They had two reunion tours in the summers of 1993 and 1994 and new studio releases in 2000, Two Against Nature, and 2003, Everything Must Go, with accompanying tours. They have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide[citation needed].

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

So very underrated. Great pick.

Should also add, unlike some bands that go away for years and years and then release an album Steely Dan's Two Against Nature is absolutely fantastic.

There are two dozen excellent Steely Dan songs that you will never hear on the radio. If you don't own any of their stuff, I would encourage you to get it.

I congratulate 604 on his selection of Steely Dan (one of my top 20 favorite bands).

With my 11th pick in the draft, troutman's K-Tel Sound Explosion selects in the drummer category, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ?UESTLOVE (Ahmir Thompson of THE ROOTS):

http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers..._Thompson.html

Drummer/producer Ahmir Thompson is a living link between the digital science of modern hip-hop and the flesh-and-blood textures of vintage R&B. He co-founded the Roots, universally hailed as one of the most sonically inventive hip-hop acts. Meanwhile, his collaborations with such artists as D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Common have reasserted the importance of real-time playing in a style dominated by sampling and programming.

"I'm really into the game of making people guess, is it a machine, or is it him?" says Thompson, who also goes by the name ?uestlove (pronounced "Questlove"). One famous example is the Roots' biggest hit, "You Got Me," which sounds for all the world like a programmed side stick pattern—until Thompson cuts loose with a blazing drum-and-bass groove. Like much of Thompson's work, the passage is startling, witty, and funky.

Thompson relies on several Yamaha kits: a new Maple Custom Absolute, several sets from the early '80s, and the Stage Custom he used with D'Angelo. But Thompson's tireless studio experimentation is as crucial to his drum sounds as the instruments themselves. "I like to mold sounds like clay," he says. "Sometimes I put drums through a guitar amp. Or we might put mikes everywhere—in the room, down the hall, anyplace you might hear the drums. Sometimes we use just the farthest mikes, EQ them until they sound dirty enough, mix it all to one track, really compress it, and then bounce it to another track. We'd go around that cycle a few times—six generations, maybe."

With my 11th round Pick, scwf's Creeping Death, proudly selects in the “East of the Mississippi” category, from Gainesville, FLA – Mr. Thomas Earl Petty

Quote:
Born and raised in northern Florida, Tom Petty began playing music while he was still in high school. At the age of 17, he dropped out of school to join
Quote:
Mudcrutch, which also featured guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench. By 1970, Mudcrutch had moved to Los Angeles with hopes of finding a record contract. The fledgling Shelter Records, founded by Leon Russell and Denny Cordell, offered the group a contract. However, Mudcrutch splintered apart shortly after relocating to L.A. Cordell was willing to record Petty as a solo act, but the singer's reception to the idea was tentative. Over the next few years, Petty drifted through bands, eventually hooking back up with Campbell and Tench in 1975. At the time, the duo were working with bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch; soon, Petty became involved with the band, which was then named the Heartbreakers. Petty was still under contract to Shelter, and the group assumed his deal, releasing Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in 1976.
Initially, the band's debut was ignored in the United States, but when the group supported it in England with a tour opening for Nils Lofgren, the record began to take off. Within a few months, the band was headlining its own British tours and the album was in the U.K. Top 30. Prompted by the record's British success, Shelter pushed the album and the single "Breakdown" in the U.S., this time to success; "Breakdown" became a Top 40 hit and "American Girl" became an album-oriented radio staple. You're Gonna Get It, the Heartbreakers' second album, was released in 1978 and it became the group's first American Top 40 record. Petty & the Heartbreakers were poised to break into the big time when they ran into severe record company problems. Shelter's parent company, ABC Records, was bought by MCA Records, and Petty attempted to renegotiate his contract with the label. MCA was unwilling to meet most of his demands, and halfway through 1979, he filed for bankruptcy. Soon afterward, he settled into an agreement with MCA, signing with their subsidiary Backstreet Records. Released late in 1979, Damn the Torpedoes was his first release on Backstreet.
Damn the Torpedoes was Petty's breakthrough release, earning uniformly excellent reviews, generating the Top Ten hit "Don't Do Me Like That" and the number 15 "Refugee," and spending seven weeks at number two on the U.S. charts; it would eventually sell over two million copies. Though he was at a peak of popularity, Petty ran into record company trouble again when he and the Heartbreakers prepared to release Hard Promises, the 1981 follow-up to Damn the Torpedoes. MCA wanted to release the record at the list price of $9.98, which was a high price at the time. Petty refused to comply to their wishes, threatening to withhold the album from the label and organizing a fan protest that forced the company to release the record at $8.98. Hard Promises became a Top Ten hit, going platinum and spawning the hit single "The Waiting."

GirlySports - In light of my not seeing habernac picking Billy Preston I would like to move my 10th round pick of Oscar Peterson fromInstrumental Soloist” to “Keyboard/Piano Player” Billy would be the only player that could bump Oscar from that chair

With the 11th round Pick (216th) Hanna Sniper's EC and the G-String Band, selects in the “Drummer” category, from Rochester, New York, United States Mr. Steve Gadd

Hanna’s Notes: Another one of my favourites, not really the most flashiest drummers in the world but he keeps time like a clock. I tried to figure out my obsession with him once because he didn’t have the allure that other drummers had… tell one day a drummer I know explained it to me… he’s a drummers, drummer

Quote:
Stephen Victor Gadd (born April 9, 1945 in Rochester, New York) is a well-known session and studio drummer, mainly known for work with Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Steely Dan, Al Jarreau, Joe Cocker, Stuff, Bob James, Chick Corea, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Jim Croce, Eddie Gomez, The Manhattan Transfer, Michal Urbaniak, Steps Ahead, Al Di Meola, Manhattan Jazz Quintet, Richard Tee and many others. Gadd is arguably the most recorded drummer in history, featured on over 600 albums. Gadd is renowned for his incredible ability to play "in the pocket," or to groove especially well with the music, or other instruments/musicians he is playing with.

I think Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints are great records, but I lost some respect for Paul Simon when researching my Los Lobos entry. Paul stole songs from others on the Graceland record. Steve Berlin did not mince any words:

http://www.jambase.com/Articles/Stor...9391&pagenum=3

I have plenty of recollections of working on that one [Graceland]. I don't know if you heard the stories, but it was not a pleasant deal for us. I mean he [Simon] quite literally – and in no way do I exaggerate when I say – he stole the songs from us... The guy was clueless... He's the world's biggest prick, basically.
-Steve Berlin on making Graceland with Paul Simon

Hope you don't mind, but I have to post some Steely Dan stuff for you. Some lesser known stuff mostly, at least to people who aren't necessarily Dan fans.

Third World Man

The Royal Scam

Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me) Sorry for the goofy Ovechkin thingy but this is the only youtube video for the song.

Jack of Speed

Pretzel Logic FLIPPING BRILLIANT!

If I knew how to make videos or had the software to do it I'd make my own for some of the songs that don't have videos on youtube like Charlie Freak and The Boston Rag,

In the USA East Miss Category Hot Banana Thrust is happy to select:

Anthrax

Anthrax is a New York City-based thrash metal band that released its first full-length album in 1984. The band was one of the most popular of the 1980s thrash metal scene and is notable for being the first to combine metal with rap music. The band has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, and is classified as one of the "big four" of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer.

Their song "Madhouse" was used in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in-game radio station V-Rock and in Guitar Hero II. The song "Now It's Dark" was also converted into simlish on the metal radio station for The Sims PC game. Their song "Caught in a Mosh" was featured in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s.

Anthrax were, almost from the start, noticeable among their peers for their willingness to experiment with genre and image. During the late 1980s, the band radically departed from the "traditional" heavy metal look in favour of a brightly colored "surfer" jam shorts style of appearance. They were known for introducing a humorous side to their music, in contrast to the serious mindedness of fellow metal bands such as Slayer and Metallica.

In 1987, Anthrax released their third album, Among the Living. This album began a lyrical trend that focused on movies, comic books and Stephen King novels. All these elements would for years become typical lyrical themes Anthrax fans would come to expect. "I Am the Law" is a tribute to comic book hero Judge Dredd. "Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)" (which, when spelled backwards, reads "nise fukin life") is about comedian John Belushi's drug addiction and death. "Indians" and the mosh pit anthem "Caught in a Mosh" are both considered Anthrax classics today. The album was dedicated to the memory of Cliff Burton. The band continued its success, sticking to the thrash metal genre of Among the Living on the album State of Euphoria. The single "Antisocial," originally by French heavy metal band Trust was a staple on MTV in regular rotation as well as on Headbangers Ball.

White Noise received mostly positive reviews and "Only" was a major hit (which led James Hetfield to claim "that is a perfect song" in some interviews).
