With our 4th pick, BF & the BFFs are very pleased to add to our stable of music icons in the UK cateogry: trailblazers of the post-punk explosion, trend-setters of independent rock, inventors of the classic "goth" sound, possessors of one of rock's all-time greatest front-men, one of alternative rock's most influential and thus, important bands, hailing from Manchester, and creators of the greatest-ever band name - Joy Division.
Quote:
Formed in the wake of the punk explosion in England, Joy Division became the first band in the post-punk movement by later emphasizing not anger and energy but mood and expression, pointing ahead to the rise of melancholy alternative music in the '80s. Though the group's raw initial sides fit the bill for any punk band, Joy Division later incorporated synthesizers (taboo in the low-tech world of '70s punk) and more haunting melodies, emphasized by the isolated, tortured lyrics of its lead vocalist, Ian Curtis. While the British punk movement shocked the world during the late '70s, Joy Division's quiet storm of musical restraint and emotive power proved to be just as important to independent music in the 1980s.
Quote:
The band's dark and gloomy sound, which Martin Hannett described in 1979 as "dancing music with Gothic overtones", presaged the gothic rock genre. While the term "gothic" originally described a "doomy atmosphere" in music of the late 1970s, the term was soon applied to specific bands like Bauhaus that followed in Joy Division's wake. Standard musical fixtures of early gothic rock bands included "high-pitched post-Joy Division basslines usurp[ing] the melodic role" and "vocals that were either near operatic and Teutonic or deep, droning alloys of Jim Morrison and Ian Curtis." Joy Division has influenced bands ranging from contemporaries U2 and The Cure to post-punk revival artists such as Interpol, Bloc Party and Editors. U2 frontman Bono stated that his group "worshipped" Joy Division. The singer said in the band's 2006 autobiography U2 by U2, "It would be harder to find a darker place in music than Joy Division. Their name, their lyrics and their singer were as big a black cloud as you could find in the sky. And yet I sensed the pursuit of God, or light, or reason...a reason to be. With Joy Division, you felt from this singer, beauty was truth and truth was beauty, and theirs was a search for both."
Agreed, why did you do it then? There's lots of good female singers out there. I'd name them, but then they'd all be snatched up before I could draft one of them.

we are proud to select with our next pick, from Seattle, Washington, Soundgarden in the USA West of the Mississippi category
Soundgarden was an Americanrock band formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984 by lead singer and drummer Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Matt Cameron became the band's permanent drummer in 1986 and bassist Ben Shepherd became a permanent replacement for Yamamoto in 1990. Soundgarden was one of the key bands in the creation of grunge, a style of alternative rock that developed in Seattle and was based around the band's record label Sub Pop. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign to a major label, but Soundgarden did not achieve commercial success until Seattle contemporaries Nirvana and Pearl Jam popularized grunge in the early 1990s. Soundgarden achieved its biggest success with the 1994 album Superunknown which debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and yielded the Grammy Award–winning singles "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman". In 1997, the band broke up due to internal strife over its creative direction. Soundgarden has sold 8 million records in the U.S.,[1] and an estimated 20 million albums worldwide.[2]
I thought you would pick up Soundgarden before too long. I saw them once in an outdoor concert in Seattle with the Screaming Trees. Spoonman was there too.

that would have been a great show. Saw Cornell twice in the last few years here with Audioslave first and then solo, the solo show at Mac Hall being probably the closest I'll get to seeing an actual Soundgarden show. Terrific songs, and there's so much more to this band than the only song they ever seem to get played on radio (and there's nothing wrong with Black Hole Sun). Badmotorfinger is one of the best records ever produced IMO.
Haynes is also primary singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the band Gov't Mule, which he founded with fellow Allman Brother Allen Woody and former Dickey Betts Band drummer and bandmate Matt Abts. In addition to the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, Haynes has recorded and toured extensively with former members of the Grateful Dead, while also maintaining an acoustic solo career. In 2004, he was ranked 23rd on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time[1], along with fellow Allman Brothers Band guitarists Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, and Derek Trucks.

Partially because I thought it would be funny. Partially because I have no knowledge of female singers, to be honest. For whatever reason I have yet to find a female singer that I've actually enjoyed. Maybe this exercise can change all of that .
Being that this is the internet, it's hard for me to tell if some of you are actually bothered by this and I apologize if it did. If it is just ribbing me because of a silly pick (I don't really like her music either, but she is good singer) then by all means, please continue.
