When you have an individual equipped with assault rifles shooting at you and your options are to return fire with a handgun or a shotgun..... It just doesn't make sense (From the footage on CBC).
I would assume this would be the type of situation the ERT would handle. On Wikipedia they list some decent options but I'm not familiar enough with firearms to know if they would really help out here...

In isolated areas, yeah...I think they used it in the manhunt for the Boston Marathon suspects (where they managed to find him inside a small boat). It might be an accessibility issue though. Are these all that common to have?

I hate people who think it's okay to take these people away for their families for whatever crazy reasons they've constructed.

New Brunswick's Attorney General will probably do what Alberta's AG did, call a public fatality inquiry.

Not a stupid question at all. However from the little I know from watching an info program on the police helicopters we have, those cameras are very effective in cities and wild areas. There's very few places a person can hide, even in the city. I mean, it'd be kinda pointless for us to have them if they didn't work in cities. But I remember watching a pursuit (may have been staged) where a guy was trying to lose the copters by running through buildings etc. Saw him nearly every step of the way.

What I would wonder is if Moncton has those kinda capabilities. I think when we got our first, we were the first in Canada? If not, I'm pretty sure only Toronto also had one. (Here's where someone proves me wrong, haha)

Because we are forced to have a news story about this tragedy, I want the story to be about the victims, not this idiot. I wish there wasn't a story at all.

As said above, I agree that removing the attention from these aggressors is a deterrent for these events.

Thoughts to the victims and their families.

FLIR (forward looking infrared) is a very effective way to track in open environments, but it's limited as soon as there's lots of stuff to disrupt heat signatures.

I've watched a couple of FLIR videos where even thick trees have obscured a person completely, and there's no chance of seeing someone in a well built structure or one that throws off its own heat. In the wide open though it's incredible how clear the video can be. People running in FLIR always reminds me of that old Lode Runner video game.

Do they have an idea of where the shooter might be, or has he escaped at this point?

To be honest I opened this thread to see if there was an update, so I don't know, haven't been watching it on the news, only saw the update during the game.

Yeah, like I said, 'what little I know'. All I know is it looked very effective from what they showed. Of course, they probably picked a scenario where it looked very good.

Also, not sure if it was FLIR. Are there other techs? Or maybe you know what the CPS has? I'm not sure.

Says on their site, 'heat signatures' dunno if that's what you are talking about. But one thing I'm seeing now is that it's obviously far more effective at night, which was the scenario I watched. Though, this scenario is night as well.

It's definitely better at night as there are fewer heat sources (e.g. hot roadways) around to confuse matters, so that's one thing they'll have going for them if they have that technology available. I know of no other special tech that they could use in this situation - just the usual spotlight and zoom.

At this juncture, unless he's out in the open, FLIR won't assist much. My concern is he's now most likely holed up somewhere, waiting for the police to come to him. With some luck his camo getup isn't just for show though, and he's decided to camp out in the woods where a helicopter has a chance of spotting him. This is a really dangerous situation all around.

Unfortunately, the majority of viewers, listeners, and people following these tragedies continue to do so because of the aggressor. The victims are sadly a lesser story.

Also, while there is 'rubbernecking' for sure, this situation isn't over, so it's kinda hard to ignore it. Still news.

There's even a safety aspect to it. I know when I first heard the report, the part that clued me in to the rest was hearing the words, 'asking people to stay indoors', while seeing the suspects picture. I was able to recall most of what I heard in the background and I rewinded the PVR to see what city it was taking place in. I was briefly worried it was Calgary to be honest.

The fact that some people on fb are actually calling this homicidal lunatic a hero makes me question the sanity of mankind. What is wrong with these people?

The internet (besides CalgaryPuck) is an evil place.

Sometimes in times when I have trouble with this place, some of the people and opinions (and hey, not discounting some of my ill advised, ill informed, or far more aggressive than necessary rants) I look up a few Facebook comments or YouTube comments. And I'm fine again.

This community, even at it's worst, is pretty special.

That's why I don't go on facebook. Some people love to think they can hide behind a computer in yo mammas basement and say crazy things that make no sense at all.

Here's the link to the police scanner for whoever was looking for it:
http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/9077/web

The entire city is basically on lock down.
City buses have stopped, schools and businesses have closed, and even Canada Post has ceased delivery for the day.

I grew up there, and have lots of friends and family in that exact area. It's cliche, but crazy to hear about something like this happening in a city like Moncton.

There hasn't been a community wide fear/concern like this since Allan Leger escaped and caused panic in the late 80's.

Here's hoping the RCMP can end this without anymore loss of life, other than this moron.

I couldn't imagine being in a situation like this, I probably would be hiding in my basement with a golf club.

Because mental illness extends well beyond the perpetrators of heinous crimes.

All their deaths are equally as tragic, regardless of gender.

I really, really thought I'd wake up today and he'd have been found by now.
