Based on her twitter, Gaudreau’s wife is really all about family. It’s pretty clear Calgary was never an option for them. I just wish that would have been communicated instead of negotiating in bad faith.
For whatever reason it wasn’t working out in NJ or Philly so Johnny and his agent had to come up with the next best compromise and approach CBJ for a sweetheart deal.
He and his wife are happier because at least they are closer to family (couldn't get closer, but hey at least he can show her he tried). The compromise is playing in Columbus and leaving $15M on the table.
It makes sense. I’m disappointed at how it played out, but not upset.
Who's to say when Johnny made his mind that he wouldn't be returning? Could have been after the loss to the Oilers, sometime in the 2 months leading up to now or even yesterday, I'm sure it was a hard decision that he went back and fourth on and he made his mind up at some point in the last week or so IMO.
Philly, Jersey, Columbus, its all the same ***t to me, its out east, closer to home, in a place where he will live in peace and quiet. Sometimes that becomes appealing after 9 years in a hockey crazed market.
BT could have been the leader and decision maker this organization needs him to be and a drop dead date for an answer should have been established so that the organization could be prepared to deviate to plan b, whether that was before this past season or during. Instead BT gambled and got burned.
It sucks, I mean i'm frustrated too, we just lost a superstar for nothing, but thats on management IMO, not Johnny. The higher ups in the organization need to start treating this like a business and not a country club, its mind boggling how they roll the dice on these assets, only to lose them for nothing.

I'd like to HIGHLY recommend the show: A.P. Bio - set in Toledo Ohio. The show is pretty much just non-stop denigration of Toledo Ohio, and wonderful acting by a Lee Stempniak look-alike.
I just want to watch you name 400+ cities. It’d be educational.
And as for visiting the US, there are definetly some cities there I would like to see. Nashville, Boston, NY, Miami, New Orleans and a few others than aren't coming to mind. Most of the Midwestern cities I've been through though just remind me of Lethbridge/Grande Prairie and that doesn't do much for me.

All the posts about his wife and her family are almost incomprehensible!?!
You’re a superstar NHL hockey player coming off your best season ever with the team that drafted you and definitely helped develop you as a player and you take your queues from your wife…?
Don’t give me any crap about happy wife, happy life. Johnny and Meredith are essentially newlyweds and she’s a registered nurse who’s about to never work another day in her life.
One day Johnny will look back on today and the negotiations that led to this decision and probably regret it as one of the worst decisions he ever made.

That seems rather childish. If I was a hockey player having grown up in Calgary and cheering for the Flames, my whole family and all of my closest friends in Calgary, was drafted to a team in the southern US and played there until reaching UFA, had a chance to sign with the Oilers for huge money, the Flames weren't willing or able to make a reasonable offer, and Edmonton was only a half hour drive from Calgary... I'd absolutely sign with the Oilers.
A multimillionaire professional athlete letting his childhood fanship direct his professional decisions as a grown ass man seems... silly to say the least.
I would never, ever, EVER sign with Dumpsville. I hate them.
I honestly don’t know if I could take their GM position if it were offered to me right now. I don’t think I could.
Did Gross and Johnny burn the bridge with Tre last night? You would have thought if the deals weren't rolling in for Johnny he would circle back to Calgary unless he absolutely hated it here.

Because there really was no good reason for him to leave and refuse the offer the Flames gave him, other than maybe going home to play where his family and friends live. Turns out that was a bunch of hooey. He didn't leave for money reasons either, and he clearly didn't leave to go somewhere that had a better shot at winning a cup. So the only remaining explanation is he just simply did not like the city or team for some reason, in which case #### him.
I just find the overreaction in here absolutely incredible. It’s like he signed with the Oilers or something. Had he picked New Jersey, nobody would’ve batted an eye, but he goes and picks Columbus instead and everyone loses their mind. Maybe it’s just me, but I was completely indifferent on where he wanted to play, whether it be the Islanders, NJ, Columbus, like who cares, it’s not here. All those other teams are in the same position, they all stink, they’re all rebuilding, they’re all a drive away.
I don’t know what the exact reasoning for his choice is, but ultimately, we already knew he was willing to accept less money where ever he went because it was a decision to be closer to family, which he is now. Columbus plays in the eastern time zone, so now his family doesn’t have to stay up late to watch him play. He’s also a drive away now instead of a plane ride away.
Regardless, I don’t think it had anything to do with the team. There was no slight here. He loved the team, loved the fans, loved the city and etc. Calgary ultimately was just too far out west. That’s what it came down to IMO. Maybe it was as simple as a Philly kid like Johnny didn’t want to play for a hated rival. I don’t know, whatever it was, he wasn’t coming back up north of the border, so again, it doesn’t make a difference to me where he ended because it wasn’t going to be here.
