Some of the most hard headed Flames apologists ripping into Johnny now, hilarious. Breath people, its not the end of the world. The Flames are not some juggernaut, Columbus ticks off boxes Calgary doesn't from a personal perspective. Johnny played 9 years here, that will most likely be over half his career, he doesn't owe the city anything. Wish him the best in CBJ.
^^ on flights, there’s no doubt that Columbus is much more convenient. But when someone says they want to be close to family, people imagine they want to live within a comfortable drive. Like if his wife wants coffee with her mom, or if Guy want to pop over to see the baby. I don’t think people thought about “well, it’s an easier flight”. NJ/Philly/NYI or even DC or Boston would have made those possible. Not Columbus, or Nashville or Chicago.
Ugh, no one wants to be THAT close to their family. Close enough to see them more, but not so close that they are dropping in all the time or making you feel guilty if you don't drop in on them all the time.
Being closer still beats being far away. On being close to home, on a scale of 1-10, Calgary is probably a 2 and Columbus a 7. So it isn't Philly or NJ, it is still an improvement for him.

I’ve been to maybe half of the nhl rinks and I will say Columbus is one of the better crowds I’ve been to for American cities. Ohio itself is a terrible place lol. I still can’t believe he chose there. Gaudreau made a very poor decision imo.
Props to those who admitted they were wrong about him.
Good heavens is it his sister or a nephew or cousin in the hospital with some incurable disease? Where does the Gaudreau family ( the ones treated like Red Carpet Royalty ) want us to send the donations?
What's that? Every bodies just fine?
He just wants to be closer to mom?
Johnny Mommys Boy works too.
And when he returns and the Saddledome tribute video starts, those paying fans who so desire should turn their backs on his tribute the way he turned his back on Calgary.
What are you talking about?
His dad had heart issues, but has been fine lately and chugging beers.

Well, maybe you and me, but that’s some families and it appeared to be the Gaudreaus. And it’s definitely the impression they were giving.
Based on her twitter, Gaudreau’s wife is really all about family. It’s pretty clear Calgary was never an option for them. I just wish that would have been communicated instead of negotiating in bad faith.
For whatever reason it wasn’t working out in NJ or Philly so Johnny and his agent had to come up with the next best compromise and approach CBJ for a sweetheart deal.
He and his wife are happier because at least they are closer to family (couldn't get closer, but hey at least he can show her he tried). The compromise is playing in Columbus and leaving $15M on the table.
It makes sense. I’m disappointed at how it played out, but not upset.
I think some of you need to do some serious traveling in the US.
Calgary is much better than 90% of the big cities there, including Columbus. It's clear that Gaudreau and his agent overplayed their hand and didn't want to go crawling back to Calgary with their tail between their legs. So they took the next best offer.
Yes Columbus is much closer to the Philadelphia area than Calgary. But I wouldn't say it's close enough to see family every weekend or whatever. A 2-hour flight, including security and baggage claim, etc. is not much better than a 4-hour flight.
We dodged a huge bullet here. This is clearly a player who does not prioritize winning, if he did he either would have stayed here or signed with NJ who have a very bright future. Instead he signed for less to play for a mediocre team with an organization nobody wants to stay at because nobody cares about the Blue Jackets. As Garth Brooks said, sometimes God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.
After spending a year guaranteeing Johnny was staying put, this is what you post?

Can’t wait to to hear his lame excuse about how it came down to the last second to move on, BS. You screwed us. Tarnished reputation in a city that all loved you and would of understand if you moved on.

If it was up to his parents, his mom would probably still be cutting his meat and dad would be bouncing him on his knee. I am sure JG wants to be closer to them more for their sake than his. I bet he was probably relieved when the Columbus offer came in and he could find a better happy medium.
