I am interested to hear the points for why John should be exempt from the booing treatment we give many opposing players? Even Fox dealt with the team better than John as he gave them heads up like MT and the fans let him hear it good. Is it just the length of time he served on the team? Most ex players have been more respectful with their comments after the fact too. I would say there is a lot of ammunition there for fans

Truthfully the way the NHL draft system is setup, it is somewhat unfair to the youngest players but that is not uncommon in union contracts. Newly drafted star players are supposed to give the team the benefit of over performance on contracts, without the freedom to leverage the market over the team. Fox and Erixon took opportunity to leverage the market without earning it, and never gave the Flames organization anything.
Where as like it or not, JG & MT put good years into the Flame organization, played hard, gave the fans something to cheer for while they were here, and not so much in case of MT, but in the case of JG earned to right to leverage the market against the Flames in whichever fashion he want to.
I probably won't boo JGs specifically if I'm there that night, because I just don't feel I need to be that fickle, I enjoyed the time he spent here and was a fan of his. To turn on him so completely for something he earned just isn't where I want to take this.
I'm more torn about MT, he never even gave the Flames a chance to take some UFA years, he never showed us 100% of his potential here, and the whole thing felt so cold and calculated, and lacking consideration for everything else that was happening with the team, he just never for 1 day considered being a Flame as part of his future. Where as JG kinda hit us a little harder, you got the feeling he ended up doing it because he was actually torn about wanting to keep a toe in Calgary. MTs only redeeming factor is how stupid his new boss is, and the absolute gold mine that was returned in exchange, as others have said even if he has resigned here and committed to the team you make that trade 100 out 100 times.
Erixon & Fox, I'll boo 'em forever, and don't feel fickle for it. I've never cheered for them, they never did anything for Calgary, they never gave the team a chance, and they took something that wasn't earned from the Flames organization.

I don't care if fans boo or not. Booing is kinda fun and if someone wants to boo him for any reason - have at it.
But the Fox comparison is odd. He played 0 games for the Flames. Johnny gave the organization over 600 games.
And for what its worth I don't actually have much issue with what Fox did. He used the leverage that was available to him - and it worked. Pro athletes have little leverage in the early part of their careers, so when they choose to use what they have, I have a hard time blaming them.
That being said I would boo the chump because it's fun.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but I probably wouldn't boo him if I made it to that game for these reasons. I'd probably boo just because it's fun to boo opposing players.
I think these events showed how immature he is at this point in his career - yes, my opinion on someone that I do not know and have no real life experience to equate. He was presented with various options on where to live and seemed to legitimately not know where he wanted to play or live. After that many years of playing in Calgary he would know if he and his family wanted to stay as they approached free agency. At some point he needed to make a call and decide how much it would take to stay in Calgary, if anything. I really seemed to struggle with that decision.
His statements and quotes afterwards show a level of indecisiveness that I figure is more immaturity. Again, just my take on someone that I don't know. I can't fault someone for legitimately being undecided and just making a call.
Also, I do think he negotiated in bad faith as you don't offer terms that you would accept and then back out again. To me that is more evidence of immaturity.
We will never know how much of this was Johnny and how much was Gross. I suspect that the agent played more into this than we are led to believe and Johnny is being thrown under the bus.

He never said that. squiggs96 at no point has even confirmed that he has met Gaudreau, only that he knows people inside his inner circle with whom he has talked about the situation, and that he has close ties to more than a couple NHL executives.

It's pretty rare for the face of a franchise to say he wants to stay with his first place team, "negotiate" until the 11th hour getting them to agree to a ridiculously large contract, and then leave to a bottom feeder for less money.
This isn't the average UFA that went elsewhere story I totally see why so many are pissed at him.

Anyway I'm just relaying what I hear from some insiders.

A grinding day of intense negotiations is at odds with the idea of meeting the terms to a t.
I still think it's possible that the Flames 'meeting his terms' happened as a hail-mary after he informed them he was testing UFA.

Johnny is going to get booed simply because so many people have had the debate among friends and family over him re-signing or not.
It was spoken of for years lol. Then it seems almost certain he's going to come back and dips last second even after being given a way better contract than he currently has.
Doesn't matter what kind of person JG is, that just leaves people feeling disrespected. Look no further than how Tree looked afterward and all the low-key shots taken by multiple sources.
I'll definitely boo the guy, but I'll still enjoy watching him play.

That whole Huberdeau/Weeger return squashed it pretty quick thank jebus, so I think people may be forgetting that for a couple weeks there, the Flames and even Calgary itself were looking like the late '10s Ottawa Senators in terms of the biggest dud place in the league to play. And I have no doubt that stuff spreads with prospective UFAs around the league. It wasn't just Oiler/Canuck fans laughing, it was fans and (Twitter) certified media around the entire league making jokes. Even eastern U.S. Twitter verified media. It was a bad look.
|
I don't really care if fans boo or cheer Gaudreau. He's a grown man, and I am confident he can take it.
But I do want to push back a little bit on the bolded stuff, here. On the one hand, I agree that following the Gaudreau drama there certainly was in the media and on the internet a strong impression that Calgary was an unpopular destination for NHL players. But I seriously doubt that had much of an impact where it actually matters: among NHL players themselves, and executives of other NHL teams. On the contrary, what happened then over the next few weeks pretty emphatically put any of this nonsensical gossip to rest as Treliving sewed up a long-term contract with his new star player before he ever even set foot in Calgary, and then went on to sign the highest profile UFA centre on the market.

The Flames started at more total money than the Jackets got him for
I know you will never side with the Flames as a franchise on anything but this is a stretch even for you
FLAMES OFFERED GAUDREAU THE MOST MONEY before he ever made the call to Tre. The 10.5x8 was on the table and everyone in the organization thought they had a deal including all media connected to the team. Then the "nah" from Judas
its not even debatable

how is it debatable that the Flames offered Gaudreau the most total dollars? He signed for 68.25 total

The boo him at Johnny’s return crowd:
‘BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO’
The don’t boo him crowd:
‘They’re saying BOOOOODREAU’
It’s honestly a hilarious debate at this point; literally no amount of the debate will have either side of the crowd act differently on Johnnys return either so I don’t get all the wasted effort to stick the respective flags/positions in the sand.
It is what it is as it were.

like what are you debating here? Its common knowledge Gaudreau signed for less than he was offered from the Flames
He signed for 68.25M...Flames started at 9x8 and moved up

I would rather have 10 out of 10 players pull the Johnny bs than a player who is drafted pull what fox pulled.
The NHL should enact a rule that says any player drafted, has to play for that team for their entry level contract, then are free to ask for a trade.
Not a fan of that kind of crap.
On a side note, Not sad both JG, and MT are no longer with the organization.
