The drama in this thread is absurd but from all the sources close to the situation, it's pretty clear that it was not Meredith that made this decision for him and playing "blame the wife" is a low-blow. It was an emotional choice, a shared choice, and a last-minute compromise. He was torn between playing closer to home but also thought about signing back to play with Lindholm and Tkachuk at the last minute before Columbus called. That's what he said in interviews/his letter and there's no reason not to believe him.
In a recent interview in Columbus, Johnny explained that Meredith embarked on a 9 month retraining/re-certification to be allowed to work in Canada as a nurse (interrupted by Covid). She does not do that if her ultimate plans were to pull him back to the US all along.
Gaudreau chose to leave and that's totally fine. He's a professional sports player, not your ex-wife. All these bitter break ups are stupid and there are 11 days until the next era is here.

Again, for me, the saddest part when he left was thinking Johnny could have cemented himself as Flames royalty, and be just as beloved as Iggy or Lanny here. He could have broke team records, had his jersey retired, and probably get cheers wherever he goes in Calgary forever. But he chose not to. It's his right, but I guess if he's not sad about it, why should I be?
I will still love the time he spent in Calgary. I don't think I've followed a Calgary prospect from early on as much I did Johnny. From his draft year as some skinny kid that looks like he should be working at McDonalds, to his BC years, to his 8 years with the Flames. It was a good ride. Just wish it would have been longer.
That said, how Treliving completely revamped the team this summer has definitely taken all of the sting out. I'd argue the team is better built now, so I'm looking forward to bigger and better things for the Flames.
I've asked this question many times in different forms, but what is the actual value of any of that? Blind adoration from a bunch of people who are obviously very fickle and might end up running you out of town if the team can't win anyways...
