Wonder what the odds are of Monahan ending up in Columbus after this season.

In regards to Treliving - I agree with those who say it was his job to know. That is his job - even if its unfair.
That said - perhaps he did know it was like a 20% chance he signed and he decided that 20% was worth more than a 3rd round pick for his UFA rights this spring or that the 20% chance plus another season with the full team was worth more than what he could acquire last year.

His job to know? That’s “magic GM” thinking, if you mean know a certainty. Unless Gaudreau up and tells him, he can’t know. And if Gaudreau tells him that he’s willing to sign, he just needs a good deal, what do you do with that?
But I agree with the weighing of options. Last summer he was (a) being told a deal was possible and (b) was dealing with a guy who scored 49 points in 56 games (and 58 in 70 the year before). What’s the return on a one year rental player like that?

He would have preferred that JG say this publicly and that it’s a huge issue for families in his situation.

So what you're saying is, this is Trudeau's fault?
I would also appreciate if Johnny blamed Trudeau for his decision and the outcome. It would make him a true Albertan lol

Gaudreau had little value a year ago and can only be traded to 3 teams. Tre gambled for a Stanley Cup run and a possible re-sign. And was probably very close.

That's the job. Dealing with uncertainty and making the best decisions based on that uncertainty. If you don't get results - you get fired. Its not fair - but its the job they are hired to do.

Even if you traded him before his NTC the market would have been soft based on his production the two years prior and COVID keeping the cap flat.
Best comparison for a return was Reinhart who fetched a late first and Devon Levi.
I think there is a case to be made that keeping Gaudreau was the right call. You still could have moved him at the deadline if the team wasn’t doing well, it gave you the opportunity to re-sign him still (even if it didn’t pan out), and you still had in the case that the team had a good year under Sutter.
How much is a single season of a player getting 40 goals and 115 points worth? I’m sure lots of GMs would pay a late first and prospect if they were acquiring a player for a single season of that production.

You can be sure the league has strongly discouraged players from commenting about covid, vaccines, travel restrictions, etc. So I don’t blame Guadreau for keeping quiet about it. But yes, from all accounts it is a very big deal with a lot of players, especially American ones.

Ok just went through the whole thread and some blame Tre, other's JG, his agent, his wife, wife's family, and on and on and on.
Surprised no one blamed science!
I mean come on, here we are in 2022 and teleportation still isn't a thing?
If it was, 1000% sure Johnny would have still be a Flame. Always one "beam me up Monny" away from family, in laws plus bonus no more flying for him!

Comes down to him not wanting to be here.
Good riddance, if you dont want to be a Flame then get out.
That goes for everyone else, we should aiming for people who want to play here.
It's all lip service, he handled it very poorly and in bad faith if the rumors are true.
What a disastrous way to ruin your reputation with a team, city and fanbase.
Time to move on.

I don’t blame Treliving for not knowing something that even Johnny didn’t know. He had to be more than a mind reader, but a fortune teller.
Real life isn’t that simple.

Worst part is I bet Gaudreau doesn't really care that much. I think his final decision was heavily influenced.

The gamble was worth it. If there was a 1% chance of Gaudreau signing, you go all in on that. We aren’t replacing him anytime soon, he’s one of the most talented players we’ve ever had.
We aren’t attracting free agents of that caliber. We’re drafting them or trading for them.

Again these types of simplistic evaluations are great on an online hockey forum but not how decision are made in the real world.

Most of the fanabase have accepted mediocrity as a whole and therefore do give him a pass for getting nothing.
Bad trades, horrible FA signings and disastrous asset management but it’s all good none of it is Trelivings fault, or something else is to blame or focus is shifted to a few of his accomplishments.
Maybe there is fear that a new GM will be much worse so it is better to accept status quo.
Young Guns Redux on the horizon.
