So first its geographic region pedantry, and now its about New Jersey and Ohio not sharing a border. This is the silliest argument I've had on the Internet in a while.
Columbus is very clearly an option close to Philadelphia. It is an hour and half away on an airplane. I'm not sure why you are so determined to not accept this. Columbus almost certainly wasn't his first choice, but it still supports the idea that his decision had nothing to do with Calgary itself and he would have been doing this if he'd been drafted by any team not relatively close to his hometown.

Johnny was “ours” as long as we paid him to be ours. That’s it. His job was to compete, entertain, and participate in the community. That was his job, and while he might have wanted to do it too, he was still paid to do it first and foremost.
He fulfilled every single obligation he had to the Flames and the city. Every one. He came here after college, as promised. He never asked for a trade. He took no shortcuts getting to UFA. All the while, he made the team better. When every obligation he had to Calgary was fulfilled, he moved on to what worked better for him.
Business is business. Fans treat others players like it’s just business all the time, but when a star player treats us that way? Oh, suddenly it was love. Come on now.

If you actually believe that every part of a hockey players relationship with the fans is a purely transactional relationship, could you post a pic of you in your James Neal jersey? He, by NHL contract, fulfilled all of his duties while playing for the flames. It was always business, right?

Because it was clear that Gaudreau wanted to sign in Philadelphia. That's what he meant by ‘close to home’ in the first place.
If you have to fly to get there without taking a full day, it's not close. Not to eastern-seaboard Americans.
Teams close to southern NJ: Philly, Jersey, Rangers, Islanders, Washington. Anywhere else and you are looking at flying distances. Gaudreau reportedly hates flying. He did not sign close to home.

As I said, the quote function had some kind of glitch. My apologies all round.

That’s not what I said, so I’m not sure why that would be actually what I believe or why I would own a James Neal jersey. Weird post.

He’s not the one doing the flying to and from Philadelphia. It will be his family, his wife & child, and his wife’s friends/family. When will Johnny have time to take a trip to Philadelphia other than for those few away games? Christmas break. His 5 day break if he wants to. All Star weekend if he doesn’t get selected. The rest he’s playing hockey games every other day.

Funny thing is he gets to fly to Finland this November, for a bad flyer that has to suck.

I’m shocked he didn’t know before FA that Philly wasn’t interested. It seems everyone else seems to talk and “tamper”, but how does he not find out from Hayes or anyone before all this happens. Even his agent said he wouldn’t get a better offer the day before FA so he must’ve known something.

But hey, if you want to make Edwards the bad guy, and if the only way to do that is to describe his actions with derogatory adjectives, I guess you'll do what you gotta do.

If we make up the words that were used, then ya, it sounds bad.
Imagine you've interviewed for a job and they offer you $76k and 2 weeks vacation. You ask the hiring manager: can you get to $80k and 3 weeks? If the answer is yes, no hiring manager assumes the deal is done and starts informing the other candidates. No, they understand that you may need a little bit more time to consider the actual final offer. If the answer was no, $78k is the best we can do, then they expect you'll still consider it and decide accordingly.
Of course, if you say: if you can get to $80k and 3 weeks then I'm in! then it's totally different. But with a life altering decision like this, you don't just assume the "then I'm in!" part unless it was actually said, which I very much doubt.

Except the proximity thing was never about Johnny travelling himself. It's family coming to them more often and/or wife+baby going the other way - especially when he's on road trips. He signed immensely closER to home.

Agreed with your post up until this last sentence. Johnny's decision did not look good based on the limited information we initially had. Didn't look good at all.
