Most only do it when it's clearly apparent that it's the best direction for the team. I don't get the feeling anyone in the Flames building feels this way right now.

I meant in terms of job approval. The guy leading the rebuild is always 'the wizard' because you're always getting the mystery box in return.

What’s most important is figuring out a coherent strategy for the team now, that YOU as management control, not players.

Yeah, he should have been like Mike Fisher. Ottawa kind of knew he'd want to go to Nashville so they traded him there.

Thats the befuddling thing. Why be afraid to share that with management? If that's how she felt then it is what it is.
Gaudreau is a great player but off ice I'm getting the impression that he's kind of a wimp about things, especially having honest discussions.
Is he just so anxious that he tries to limit communication as much as possible, even when its absolutely necessary?
All the problems could dissolve with one direct 10 minute phone call with Brad in the weeks and months leading up to it. "Hey, I'll be honest with you Brad, it's not looking good because my wife feels ____ way about being across a border away from family support while she brings our child into the world."
Brad isn't going to put out a hit on him for it. It's business.
Just give them the lay of the land so that the team can prepare their alternate plan, and at least anticipate needing one. Surely he had a sense on his wife's feeling/position towards Calgary well before then.
In the end he looks like a chump from every angle on this and painted himself into a corner because of inaction and indirectness.

Yep but things can go south fast if the mystery box reveals busts. I think enthusiasm for rebuilds starts to wane when the results come up empty.

lol "be like Mike Fisher." That guy was a weird dude. I used to be roommates with some Ottawa bitties, and they had some great stories about his dating life and religious beliefs conflicting with eachother and the agony that caused him. Super weird dude.
I think everyone knew he wanted to go to Nashville. It wasn't a big mystery that Ottawa uncovered.

Usually the guy who starts the rebuild is fired by the time things turn around

How many times does the guy get two shots at a rebuild?

Super weird dude who's married to Carrie Underwood.
I'm guessing these Ottawa bitties are a bitty jealous.

Been busy with work/Stsmpede stuff so catching up on some of the podcasts.
Interesting that Pat mentioned the Flames did double back on Wednesday to the Gaudreau camp with a 7 year offer above the $10.5M number.
He or his Wife or both don’t want to be here. I have no time for that guy not a Johnny fan anymore. I wish him good health but do not wish him anything good professionally going forward.
He deserves the boo birds when he comes back

Damn....really?
It has to be the pregnant wife wanting to be closer to her family and not having to cross the border all the time to do it I guess? Maybe some of her (or his) immediate family is not vaccinated?
Sucks

You know...it really is possible that in the big picture it's COVID that did screw us here.

That is interesting...because put a bit of a pin in the narrative that there was a lot of bad blood on the Flames side with how Gaudreau handled things on Tuesday. Unlikely they circle back if they think things went that poorly.
On the flip side it's kind of weird that Johnny seems sour against the organization for some reason.

Definitely played a part in it. Did the government bring back airport testing now also?

Covid is going to screw a lot of Canadian teams with American players needing new contracts.
At least the Europeans don't bitch about it despite being much more isolated from family. They make it work and use summers for that.

Europeans families coming over from Europe are going to have to deal with it whether they are visiting Canada or the US.
Also going to be isolated from family in the case of another lock down if they are in Canada or the US. Being closer to home isn't an option for them.
Much easier for an American to travel within the US if things lockdown again.
It really is remarkable though that Coleman who is a guy from Dallas, who was playing for Tampa Bay, choose Calgary as a UFA during the middle of COVID. Should give him an A for that alone.

Johnny does seem sour. It's like he forgot everything the Flames did for him and his family. He got the royal treatment when he was here.

Draft Pick

It's also going to do a number on the Blue Jays.. there are a ton of unvaccinated baseball players that can't cross the border to play in Toronto, let alone actually be on the team.
Also allegedly causing issues with other teams in AL East not wanting to trade for unvaccinated players in case they need to play playoff games in Toronto, quite interesting.

Again, the issue hasn’t been that Johnny walked away from the flames. It’s that he apparently negotiated in bad faith where they apparently met his price which he negotiated and he still walked away. If his intent was to go to the States, very few would be complaining. But why negotiate, lead the team on and then when you get what you want you walk away? To me he soured on management or ownership. The question is really what caused that and was it justified. Someone must have #### in his cheerios for things to go this way. Given his comments on wanting to move to anywhere but Calgary I’m inclined to think he had it in for someone. Again no idea why (that aspect we’ll probably never find out).

Gaudreau's signing presser in Columbus was painfully awkward, and like Eric Francis correctly said, very embarrassing to Johnny...not that he'd necessarily know it, as he seems to lack emotional intelligence.
He looked absolutely stunned, and he was totally unprepared for even soft-ball questions, of which there were many. He also referred to having started thinking weeks ago about going Columbus. That's either a lie, or he lied to everyone in Calgary.
Finally, he was offered a chance to make some conciliatory remarks to the Flames and he chose not to. Instead he mumbled some half-assed platitudes to the fan base...and he even managed to make that seem insincere. It was just awful. Possibly the worst I've ever seen from an athlete in that position.
I think Gaudreau in Columbus renders him irrelevant to hockey. Just a bizarre choice he's made. Weird dude. Adios.
