Maybe. Although that's a pretty important skill for a representative: nailing down a client's exact wishes and having the experience to realise when they're unsure or unclear, and then guiding them through that.
Who knows whether Gross had the rug pulled out from under him completely, but if the story is as advertised, I do feel for him. I've had similar things happen where I've told clients in my most serious voice, "ok, if we do THIS, then THIS is the possible result" and still somehow they've misunderstood me and led me into professional situations I'd rather have not been in. Then I drop them as clients.
But yeah, having a feel for when one of those awkward situations is coming is definitely a skill in Gross' position.

I think he and his family truly did enjoy Calgary. I believe Johnny and his family are genuine here and don't think any of this had anything to do with Calgary or Flames fans. It sounds like it may have been more of a thing with his wife's family and them living outside the US and maybe some issues with the organization.
Yeah but my point is Johnny was just giving lip service to Columbus fans. Say whatever he thinks they want to hear
I guess so but it's still pretty weak. Many many families and players raise families far, far away from home. Think if Europeans who play here. And there are established families too, not newlyweds like the Gaudreaus.
Not everybody is the same or have the same opportunity.
Part of it I think is due to the fact he's just not particularly well spoken. However, it was VERY weird.
I still believe that he thought he would land in Philly and that the Flyers would make the necessary moves to meet his contract requirements.
Then they didn't.
Johnny's warts are not unknown to the rest of the league. I'm sure some teams were asking the same questions
- Should we devote that much cap to a winger
- Should we make a 7 year high cap commitment to a player at that age
- What production will Johnny deliver going forward. Something close to last season or the 2 seasons prior
- Can he deliver in the playoffs.
At the end of the day the Flyers decided the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. So that took away the major seat Johnny thought he would land on. And with the music coming to an end, his agent told him to plant that butt on a chair before there were none left.
And that chair was CBJ.
The only flaw in this theory is I still can't grasp what the heck happened with New Jersey and why that isn't where he went.
I still don't get why he had to sign on July 13. Are the chairs gone? If he didn't get Philly doesn't that give him the chance to scope the entire United States? He could still be negotiating today with a lot of teams. I always thought Seattle was a sneaky contender for him. In a few years he could be playing with Berniers and Wright.
The contract he signed is panicky and sloppy. No signing bonus, no frontloading.

His contract doesn’t have a signing bonus? What in the actual ####? How does his agent have a job?

yeah I don't get it either. Klingberg and Kadri are still on the market too ... there was really no rush to get this done on Wednesday. I doubt the BJs offer would have been off the table and you never know if Philly or NJ came back at some point.

From an outsider perspective that was the absolute best destination for him if he was leaving the Flames. Flyers are a train wreck and that was never probably going to work out well for him. New Jersey is very close to his family, minimal travel, and it's an up and coming team that if they find some goaltending should amount to a contender during a duration of his contract. I do think the Jackets have some nice young pieces though and aren't as bad as some make them out to be.

He wouldn't be the first free agent to over play his hand. I suspect the list of possible teams wasn't very long. But perhaps it's also a sign of a less experienced agent at the helm. I think someone posted that he doesn't have a lot of big clients.

Columbus is not going to be a real contender for the Stanley Cup with Gaudreau as their leader. Flames only had (and still have) a chance because of Sutter. But maybe they really didn’t.
Gaudreau won’t stir the drink for a championship team. Deep down he knows that.
There would be a lot more focus on him if he signed with NJ than Columbus. Literally no one cares about the Blue Jackets.

Meredith had family there, and it was northeastern US. That sealed it.
Sure he could have done all those things and it would've landed him a better contract in a place that he had the time to scope out and look into thoroughly over days/weeks if needed, but I guess this is how he does his business.
The one thing I'm most confident of in all of this is that Johnny and his agent screwed up. I don't know who was more at fault, but they played it very poorly. This outcome for Johnny was certainly not the best possible outcome. It was not well played.

Probably not but don't overrate the NJ fan base. I think a player can disappear there pretty easily. Look at Dougie Hamilton. I feel he's a player that doesn't love the spotlight himself.
