I think most people that get sick in Mexico is from Sun Stroke. You drink a lot, and are being exposed to the sun much more than you are used to.

The ruins in Telum are quite close...I think only a couple hours away and you should be able to book a tour through your hotel. They are pretty cool as they are right on the ocean.

As others have said Xel-ha is fun.

Try checking out a Cenote or two.

I spent 4 months all over Mexico and the only place I got sick was Cancun. Probably from the seafood in an old town restaurant.

I also ate tacos that I purchased from two guys that were cooking them up sitting on the tailgate of their truck under an overpass. No problems.

I highly recommend the street taco. Delicious.

I've benn down there 3 times as well. I personally haven't got sick yet but my wife did once. She had taken some oily fish dish from the buffet that no one else in our group did and said that it just "tasted funny" she was out for a good day and a half.

That being said, the water is fine, the ice is fine, neither one of us have the hep shot.

I'd personally go with more Pesos than USD these days. You can get a much better exchange rate here on them unless you go to an actual bank there and exchange your funds. Use your credit card for excursions etc.

A little hint on excursions... do some research on the internet as to where you want to go... there is a lot of good advice in this forum and other travel forums for places to go and ways to go there.

Personally I wouldn't take a packaged excursion to Tulum/Xceret/Xel-ha as it is cheaper and better to just hit the collectivos and go there yourself. The biggest advantage to this is you aren't pressed for time... if you like hanging out at the ruins at Tulum and the beach (which is phenominal, don't forget your swim suit) you can stay longer than the 3 hours or so allotted (same for Xel-Ha).

If you are really into snorkelling I'd suggest either Xel-Ha for a more controlled environment or going to Akumal itself. Akumal is supposed to be a lot better than either of the "Parks".

I agree. We have always gone on our own. BUT, we do always hire a guide when we get there. It has been my experience that you get way, way more out of the history and culture of the site you are visiting. And then once your guide takes you through, you are free to do whatever else you want.

And the roads to both Tulum as well as to Chitzinitza are great now, so no worry about renting a car for the day either.

We did this as well. Don't be afraid to negotiate a price with these guys either. They'll give you a rate that includes your gate fee which was about $6-9/person. The guides have multiple park passes that they just guide you through the gates. When we went we paid about $13 per person for a group of 5, but you might be able to do better. If you feel the need to take the train on the road in/out of the park do so, but the 10-20 minute walk wasn't worth the $5 in my opinion.
