If you do your due dilligence then yes they are equal. If the Flames do their due dilligence and he interviews well and the Flames don't draft in the top 4 then I think they'd be silly to pass on him (provided that the big four are off the board). If he doesn't interview well and the dilligence doesn't pan out then sure don't take him, but folk shouldn't wring their hands at the prospect of taking him just because of his birth certificate, it's all unhealthy paranioa.

But a solid, big tough all round Dman wouldn't hurt my feelings so it would be great to strut away from the draft with:
One of: MacKinnon/Barkov/Lindholm/Monohan
One of: Jones/Nurse/Zadorov/Ristolainen
Would have to trade up though to walk away with one out of each of those groups of players, so it's highly unlikely the above scenario happens.

I notice you don't have Hagg in your choices. 6'2, 200 pounds. By all accounts good speed and solid 2way play. What are your thoughts on him?

What kind of interview questions will Nichuskin have to pass to do well in an interview?
I presume he will tell any team interviewing him that he wants to come to the NHL, so what else could raise a red flag?

His elite talents won't help the Flames if he's using them in the KHL or is difficult to deal with like some Russians can be. If he's as good as advertised he would be taken 1st or 2nd overall but he won't and the reason the teams picking top 3 will pass on him are the same reasons the Flames should. NHL franchises are fully aware of the risk. The Flames simply don't have a deep enough talent base to play high stakes poker with this pick. If the Flames take him I hope they did their homework as it would typical Calgary Flames for the worst case scenario to happen with this kid.

Haven't really read up much on Hagg. He does sound like yet another solid young Swedish Dman with top 4 potential, and prototypical of the type of Dman that can succeed in today's NHL. Smart, mobile, decent size, moves the puck well, and is capable of providing offense from the back end. Sounds like another solid option as well. The other guys I listed though, are complete monsters physically, compared to Hagg.

What's the story with these young draftees that are currently playing in professional leagues in Europe?
Some of them have contracts that extend one or even two more years. (according to eliteprospects)
Ristolainen - it says he has a contract until 2014/15
Lindholm - it says he has a contract until 2013/14
Can these come over and play in the NHL next year (if ready), or do they have to play out their contracts?

Here's a mock draft showing Nichushkin taken #3 and Nurse moving into the Top 5, enabling the Flames to taken Barkov at #6.
I'll take that!

I believe their leagues in Sweden & Finland have transfer agreements with the NHL, so they can come over right away.
I really like the look of Lindholm, but how far off do they reckon he is from being NHL ready?

Yeah they have clauses in their deals that if they get a nhl deal they can go right away over seas... but in case of Barkov specifically, I don´t think he would even be able to come next year even though he might be nhl ready. He still needs to carry out mandatory military service (eligible at 18) and isn´t he still in school?

They must have wrote the article well before it was published. WSH was pretty low at one point and then went on a real tear. But yeah those standings look wonky.

Haha Carolina is picking 24th in that mock draft. Just shows how far off the earth they have fallen in the last few days.

The mock draft was done based on the standings on March 13 ( http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=663741).
Crazy how the Caps turned their season around in a month.

Anyone know anything about Bo Horvat?
He's gone up to 10th in the latest ISS rankings.
His numbers seem pretty decent, if we're just going off that.

^ this was updated 10 days ago before the Flames dropped up the standings. What's interesting about it is that they have the 'Canes gambling on Nichushkin with the 4th pick and the Flyers going after Nurse with the 6th. They also have the Oilers targetting a Dman.
It makes you wonder if these teams will go off the board to fill their needs.
Unfortunately the Preds needs match ours... we really need to lose to them next week.

I'm digging this post up from waaaaaay back in the thread, because I just realized something about this kid.
Like you said, he was drafted by San Jose in 2010, round 6, 163rd overall.....interesting though, is that pick was originally our pick, and Sutter used it to acquire Henrik Karlsson from the Sharks.
//the more you know
