I'm thinking back further than that. When's the last time a 1st rounder made any sort of impact in the Flames' lineup? I think that's why we all love Baertschi so much, it's such a breath of fresh air to be able to get excited about a top pick for once.
You specifically said prospect pool in the present tense, but I guess I misinterpreted you.
Another thing- a lot of people seem to forget the last time we had a top 10 draft pick we selected Dion Phanuef.
Tied for 5th/6th. Looks like it's time to evaluate the 2nd tier players more closely. Boy being a Flames fan is incredibly frustrating. Just when there was light at the end of the tunnel the team rewinds to the Young Guns who were never bad enough to get the difference making players in the draft. Can't win enough and can't lose right.

I was expecting a second tier player all along, but at this point I'm worried we're going to get pushed out of that 5/6 spot where we can get one of those two second tier centers.
I know that Florida, Colorado and whoever else will have had some bad management decisions to get them where they are in the standings but I don't think any of them are that stupid to make that deal.
It sucks to not get one of the top 3. With one of the top 3 (or 4) you have a player you can build around for decades to come to having a good player. Just looking at some of the past few drafts its hard to pick out too many franchise players once you get past the first grouping of players. Lots of nice looking prospects and players, but not the franchise changer that you hope to get.
Still crossing my fingers one of the second tier can still be a franchise changer, but I'm doubtful.

Oiler fans have their hearts set on Monahan. They're going to out-suck us and take him.
I would have thought Nurse would be the target.
A supposed big, tough defensive defenseman seems exactly like what they need and any concerns about his offensive upside could be somewhat overlooked with the supposed talent they have already.
Monahan would fill a need but they seem to be fairly crowded already at the top 6 forward position with a gaping hole(s) on defense.
