There's nothing wrong with Kessel. He's just not the type of player you really build a team around. He's a very good support player, however.
I think people expect more out of MacKinnon/Drouin/Barkov/Jones.

Either MacKinnon or Barkov if we keep out pick, and either Monahan or Lindholm if we trade down and I'll be a happy guy.

Agreed, especially a Dman. No need to burn a year.

I strongly disagree that people expect all 4 of those guys to become better than Kessel.
You're expecting a Stamkos/P Kane/Giroux/Doughty from this top 4?
It's highly arguable that the latter 3 are better than Kessel anyway. Talk about underrated. Just wait until Toronto has some success and Kessel shows everyone who the **** he is.

No one's saying Kessel's a bad player, he's a great player, just not a player you want to build around IMO.

Kessel is a 5 time 30 goal scorer at age 25 or 26 (I think he's on pace this year anyway) and has more goals and points than anyone in his draft, including toews.
If any of those guys are that good their team will be fortunate.

Kessel is extremely soft and his defensive game is non-existent.
Yes, I do expect more from the top 4 this year.

No he doesn't. Backstrom has played roughly 100 less games and has 40 points more.
This team would be fortunate to add a player that can score like Kessel, but in a draft that's been highly touted for a while, and seemingly picking up steam for talent in the top half I think it would be a bit of a disappointment if we didn't get a franchise player. It's lofty expectations, but that's what the top 4 in this draft are billed as - only Johnson was thought to be one in 06.

I forgot backstrom. Thanks. Not sure he is a franchise player either but I get te point.
Wtf do I know about this years draft, but I think people are in for disappointment if they expect any kid drafted this June to be a difference maker in the next 3 years, and no more than a few ever. All four of the top picks? I'd say not a chance.

Well, the chances that ALL of them reach their potential as franchise guys is slim, the consensus is that the 4 of them have a legitimate chance to be the best player on the team they go to in the not to distant future. Jones and Mackinnon have an excellent chance to be "face of the franchise" types such as Stamkos and Tavares are with Tampa and NYI, whilst Drouin, Barkov and to a lesser Lindholm can be top 2 pieces that you build on(think guys like Kane, Zetterberg, Backstrom).

If we don't get top 4, I just hope we end up with Lindholm.

I think the Flames should stay away from their best player being their captain next time around.

I think the Flames need to stay away from definitive statements and just go with best choice.
Every team in the past 6 years except LA seems to have done just fine winning the Cup with their best player as captain.

There is no chance that any team will trade their top-five from this draft for a speculative pick in 2014. No matter how strongly anyone feels about how bad the Flames will be in 2013–14, it is still far too big a risk to pass up this year's draft class.
