Why learn from near misses when you can learn from direct hits!?

yes, not great moves....bad moves.....but nothing to do with drafting, something they seem to be doing ok with the past few drafts

Their drafting is too early to tell. All the drafts look great for the first couple of years.

As far as we can tell today the Flames may have increased their prospect situation from possibly the worst to somewhere in the bottom 10 in the league. Improvement I guess but the only direction they could go from Sutter's days as GM was up and they have but it's debateable today how much. Time will well if Sven can stay healthy and contribute in the NHL. Still a long time before we ever find out if Gadreau or Jankowski will ever be an NHL player. If the Flames pick Nurse (my ultimate fear) or even Fucale (anything is possible with Feaaster and Co.) with #6 it's going to further cloud just how well the new management is doing as both of those players are a long time away from becoming NHL players.

IF you get a chance, the Fan had Cory Pronman on yesterday. He believes that Elias Lindholm is the best option for the Flames @6. Then goes on to say that Zykov is a good look at 22 for the Flames. Seems to think as well from hearing people talk that Nichushkin has the best chance at altering the top three and pushing one of the big three down. which is a good thing for Barkov fans. Especially if Carolina is sold on Monahan or Lindholm. Top six has potential for some very different selections than the concensus leads us to believe.

Not sure how anyone could be lukewarm or undecided on the 2011 draft. Despite only having 5 picks we ended up with:
1. Baertschi - we all know what he can and will bring
2. Granlund - Tied for 2nd in points at the World Juniors. Played okay in top finnish league after his brother left for North America. Still a project but has good skill
3. Wotherspoon - Surprised everyone by becoming a key member of Canada's blueline at the World Juniors. Played well in the WHL playoffs and Mem Cup. Looks very much like a future NHLer, perhaps as early as next season.
4. Gaudreau - Hobey Baker finalist. Lead the World Juniors in goals. Not much more he could've done. His stock his risen dramatically since being drafted. One of our best prospects.
5. Brossoit - Questionable cut from the World Juniors. Dominated the WHL and took his team to the Mem Cup. Looks like good value from a 6th round goalie.
There's plenty of drafts from our past that didn't look as impressive two years later. You're selling that draft class short if you think they are indistinguishable from the average Flames draft. 2011 rightfully has people thinking that Flames have finally improved their drafting.

Those are the first two picks I hope we make too. I'd like to take the chance on Zykov, but admit he's a risk to make it.

Gaudreau will have seen some NHL games by this time next year (actually March/April). We will not know for sure if he is an NHL player at that point but I think we might see how he adapts to the speed in the NHL. I guess it all depends on what you think a long time is. To me next year isn't that long to wait.

You're not sure Zykov will make the NHL? what leads you to that conclusion mind my asking? I've heard nothing but good things about him except for his skating. A big bodied scoring RW screams NHL'er to me. A Russian Horton maybe?

Yeah just skating. I like the fact that he's got size and is a RW. Obviously he had a great year. Another thing I like is that he came over to play in the CHL in pretty much the ####tiest location possible. He likely really wants to play the NA game.

Why will Gaudreau get playing time this year? From what i have heard his dad is pretty adamant about his son getting his degree. Not saying that Gaudreau jr and sr will not change their mind, but i would say its 50/50 at best that Gaudreau will turn pro for the 2014 season.

Not sure how many draft eligible players he played with but his team did make it to the Q finals against Halifax and handed them their first loss in the playoffs. I think he can fix his skating as opposed to trying to fix other things in his game. Which I haven't heard too much of.

This up and coming season not this year. At the end of the 2013-2014 NCAA season I think he will sign and play a few games to knock that year off his ELC and get his bonus and Salary. Join the Flames for the 2014-2015 season.

I get what you were saying, but if he wants his degree ( going off what his dad has said) he can't sign until March of the 2014-2015 season.

From what I've heard on my end, Gaudreau isn't the greatest student. So his parents want him to finish his degree because if he turns pro, and it doesn't work out, he'll still have a degree to fall back on.
On the other hand, if he turns pro now, and it doesn't work out, chances are he'll never want to return to school.

I see nothing wrong with a young man wanting to finish his degree. That's the risk you take with a college player - if you call it a risk at all. Besides, it's only a couple more years, and he can work on his game / physical stature in the meantime. The only reason we see him on the team any earlier is for selfish reasons.

I hate references to Moneyball when used for Hockey.
