Trade to announce: Buff trades Stafford to Calgary for Stajan and Butler
After the first round we come away with Lindholm, Monahan, Compher, Horvat, Stafford.
Gone are Stajan, Butler, Cammi and Gio.
Rip it.

I would hate to trade Gio (or any of our top pairing D man). The Flames are pretty bare on D prospects to replace him. Guys I would Dangle for trades would be Stempy, Cammi or Tanguay.

I disagree, it's very unlikely those drafted this year play right away anyway... Other veterans can be picked up without any acquisition costs during UFA period...I'd LOVE to see those moves made... Rebuild in HyperDrive!!

Has there ever been a team that drafted 4 times in the first round? Seems a bit unrealistic IMO.

They could use every single post-1st round pick on D...there's no need to try to make the playoffs in 2013-14... Not even 14-15, really... I'd be aiming for 2015-16 as the year where everyone is saying...
... "Wow! Feaster and Co rocked that rebuild about as good as could possibly have been hoped!!"

I would only take Pulock over Horvat at those draft positions.
Backlund, Jankowski, Lindholm, Monahan, Compher, & Horvat at center moving foward is a little ridiculous and I think Pulock could be a top 2 d-man.

After those trades the team will still have
Hudler-Tanguay-Stempniak
Baertschi-Backlund-Stafford
Glencross-Reinhart-Horak
Jackman-Begin-McGratton
8 of the 12 forwards are Vets
Wideman-Brodie
Sarich-Cundari
Smith-Breen
D is horrendous but thats for UFA
None of the new draftees should be on the team next year, let them dominate whatever league their from.

I don't like the last trade at all. I understand getting rid of a center in Stajan makes sense, but I'd prefer we not get Stafford. And I think the first is a bit slanted towards the Flyers. Despite the terrible season Giordano has had, I think he's worth more than 15 spots in the draft, have the Flyers add a second or something and I'd be happy with this draft day.

I like the idea of drafting a boat of C and letting some convert to a wing later on...many will be better off there anyway.

You add 3 1st round draft picks with one elite player like Monahan/Lindholm and add them to the NHL-ready players the Flames have in their system and they have 8 players READY to play!
After this draft, I think the Flames have a top 5 Youth/Prospects depth chart in the NHL.
|
Yeah I'm going to say no to that. If they have a good draft they should be able to move into the 10-20 territory but as it sits now the Flames still are in the bottom 10 of the league as far as prospects go.

Well we have 3 already, CBJ has 3 and they're looking to make the playoffs next year and could use another vet. So adding another shouldnt be unrealistic.

You can't have enough centermen imo, at worst you can convert them to wing. Plus not like all will develop like we'll hope they would do.

Just goes to show you, even with multiple picks, you can still totally blow it.

Stafford is exactly the type of guy we need imo. Coming off a bad year, still young, big, skilled. Needs a change. Him with Backs and Baertschi on the right side would be a good line moving forward imo.

Any word on this Pavel Buchnevich... led Russia in scoring at the under 18s. He is eligible this year... looks like he's sitting in 2nd round in McKenzie's rankings.

Yeah, but go look at that draft. It's not exactly stellar.

For those of us wanting a rebuild for several years, perhaps this year is actually the perfect time to initiate one as the draft is allegedly so deep... Lets hope so!!

yup. Plus Connolly and Pyatt have a combined 1500 NHL games, that's not too shaby. The Isles just blew it because they packaged those two and traded them for Mike friggin Peca a year later or so. Mezei was pretty meh though and Kudroc was a complete bust.
The Avs did pretty well though. Also, most of the teams with three picks in the 1st have done well (I also posted this in the drive for 30th thread two days ago):
Ottawa in 2011
# 6 - Mika Zibanejad
# 21 - Stefan Noesen
# 24 - Matt Puempel
Florida in 2010
# 3 - Erik Gudbranson
# 19 - Nick Bjugstad
# 25 - Quinton Howden
Edmonton in 2007
# 6 - Sam Gagner
# 15 - Alex Plante
# 21 - Riley Nash
St Louis in 2007
# 13 - Lars Eller
# 18 - Ian Cole
# 26 - David Perron
Washington in 2004
# 1 - Alex Ovechkin
# 27 - Jeff Schultz
# 29 - Mike Green
Los Angeles in 2003
# 13 - Dustin Brown
# 26 - Brian Boyle
# 27 - Jeff Tambellini
Washington in 2002
# 12 - Steve Eminger
# 13 - Alex Semin
# 17 - Boyd Gordon
Really good drafting by the Caps here. All 6 guys are full-time NHLers ... well, Ovechkin was a no-brainer, but to get the other 5 ones right as well is not bad at all. Nearly every team has got at least one impact player out of it ... the Kings got their captain, St Louis got Perron and used Eller to get their #1 goalie. Looking at Florida, I'm not sold on Gudbranson, but Bjugstad is looking really good. The Oilers are probably the worst in this list ... Gagner is okay, but not outstanding. They had a complete bust in Plante and traded Nash for a 2nd later.
The closest comparable to our picks (5-7; 20-25; 25-30) is probably Ottawa two years ago. The jury is still out on Noesen and Puempel obviously, but Zibanejad is looking good so far.

I really like Elias Lindholm, however the more I read about Monahan, he really is my guy.
To have our own Jonathan Towes is exactly what we need.
We already have a couple of high skilled guys like John Gudreau and Mark Jankowski. Monahan seems like a guy you want leading your team.
