I agree that we should not trade our first round pick. But look at where the other picks are and how deep the next group of talent is. Two extra picks could mean a huge difference to a rebuilding organization.
Picking where the standings are right now would mean
We give up #21 and #29
Getting back would be #26, #34, #37, #56.
Difference between 21 and 26 is not that great in a deep draft.
Difference between 29 and 34 is even less as the depth thins out.
Same group of players are going to be in the 28-38 range and you could get two of them not just one of them. Late second round pick helps to add depth to the players that are available with the third round pick.
Deep draft there are fewer guys that stand out as need to have, and more guys that have holes in their games or select talents that you can make easier mix and match decisions.
Flames have a pretty empty cupboard of prospects and two more picks in a deep draft can go along ways to helping them turn the corner sooner.

Assuming that Gauthier has already been picked would it not be better to have three of the following players instead of just two? Maybe depending on how the draft shakes out you could end up with four of these players instead of just two. Granted this is how I would rank them.
Mantha
Lazar
Wennberg
Hagg
Zykov
Mueller
Rychel
De La Rose
Morin
Petan
Bailey

Looking at our roster tonight I'm starting to think there's a player, or handful of players that the Flames really want that won't be available at or after pick 7. I'm guessing Barkov, Lindholm. The coach wouldn't be icing that kind of roster for a guy like Nurse... We must want one of the top dogs.

Watched a few videos on Alex Wennberg last night. Love his skating, very shifty. Always makes something happen. Could be a good pick if he gets to the STL pick.

A lot of people think he has 10-15 overall potential.
We'd be lucky if he was still around.

This mock draft has my dream draft

i love hagg and think he may actually be around for the 21st pick, also by selecting a blue chip forward in lindholm it makes it very easy for me to see the flames roll the dice with petan, yet another high skill diminutive forward.

Love that draft but would be hoping Compher slips one more pick to us instead of Petan.
Also why has Lazar fallen so far? At the start of the year most people were pegging him to go top 10

If we end up with Lindholm and a nice D prospect I'd be ecstatic with this draft, regardless of what the third pick is, but I don't see us adding another really small forward into the fold with Petan.
Also, I know offense is a big need for Nashville, but do they need Wingers over centers?

Bold, wild speculation... one of The "big 3" will fall outside the top 5.

I'll take that bet. By "big 3" you mean Jones, Drouin, MacKinnon? Can't see any of those 3 falling outside the top 5.

I can't see anyway even with them losing all the rest of their games where they pick better than 7th. Worse case 11th.

I don't think that will happen, but what are you thinking? It's plausible Nichuskin pips one of them, but whose the other guy? Assuming one is Nichuskin.

I would bet a lot of money that the top 3 consists of MacKinnon, Drouin, and Jones in some fashion.

I could see Barkov slipping into the top 3. Or Nichushkin going top 5. But I can't really see any scenario where any of MacKinnon/Jones/Drouin falls to 6.

The more I hear about JT Compher the more I like. We could use a Ryan Kesler (minus the diving) type center on our team.

There is no way three teams pass on Drouin/Mackinnen/Jones in order for one of them to go #6

Only way this possibly happens is if someone really likes Nichushkin at 3/4 and someone else really wants Barkov (C) or Nurse (D) and that allows the winger Drouin to fall to 5/6 but highly unlikely

My thinking was Jones would go first, Nichushkin second, Drouin/Mackinnon third, Barkov fourth and one of Lindholm or Nurse fifth. That leaves Mackinnon or Drouin in sixth. Chances are it would be Drouin.

That would be a very successful draft IMO. Really hope we can end up at that seven spot. Anything lower is pretty much out of reach at this point.

Don't want Hagg. Swedish Bouwmeester. No physical game. We need a bruiser.
