Isn't this draft being compared to the 2003 draft? Well, here are the forwards picked in the first round that year sorted by number of points:

2nd - Eric Staal (686 GP, 621 PTS)
19th - Ryan Getzlaf (553 GP, 517 PTS)
11th - Jeff Carter (560 GP, 406 PTS)
5th - Thomas Vanek (582 GP, 483 PTS)
28th - Corey Perry (570 GP, 462 PTS)
17th - Zach Parise (546 GP, 445 PTS)
24th - Mike Richards (571 GP, 423 PTS)
3rd - Nathan Horton (591 GP, 402 PTS)
13th - Dustin Brown (639 GP, 386 PTS)
6th - Milan Michalek (544 GP, 354 PTS)
23rd - Ryan Kesler (575 GP, 349 PTS)
4th - Nikolai Zherdev (421 GP, 261 PTS)
10th - Andrei Kostitsyn (398 GP, 222 PTS)
16th - Steve Bernier (461 GP, 180 PTS)
29th - Patrick Eaves (410 GP, 139 PTS)
15th - Robert Nilsson (252 GP, 118 PTS)
18th - Eric Fehr (302 GP, 112 PTS)
26th - Brian Boyle (309 GP, 82 PTS)
25th - Anthony Stewart (262 GP, 71 PTS)
27th - Jeff Tambellini (242 GP, 63 PTS)
22nd - Marc-Antoine Pouliot (192 GP, 57 PTS)
12th - Hugh Jessiman (2 GP, 0 PTS)

The defensemen sorted by points:

9th - Dion Phaneuf (596 GP, 339 PTS)
7th - Ryan Suter (586 GP, 270 PTS)
14th - Brent Seabrook (595 GP, 246 PTS)
20th - Brent Burns (560 GP, 237 PTS)
8th - Braydon Coburn (493 GP, 140 PTS)
21st - Mark Stuart (425 GP, 58 PTS)
30th - Shawn Belle (20 GP, 1 PTS)

I know points aren't everything, but it's just to give some idea. Anyway, while having a higher pick is always better, dropping a few spots isn't as big a deal as many are making it out to be.

About 10 days ago I would have thought Monahan would have been a consolation prize if we win a couple games. Now Im just praying hes still available at 7 or wherever we end up.

I imagine someone ends up dropping to us. Hopefully we can still steal Lindholm/Monahan.

and Retweet Vlad, this organization deserves a freakin break for a change.

Man. I honestly don't think any team has had as much bad luck as we have. Come on Bettman, please.

I wonder if that is indeed the answer... Might need to fold the franchise and start again then.

The most amazing thing about this post is the fact that Eric Staal has played 686 games.

It seems like yesterday he was a kid.

People thought we broke the curse in 2004, but did we? Or was it just a torturer keeping his victim alive to prolong the pain?

In 2007, the Flames were leading the Oilers 2-0 halfway through the game on HNIC when it was announced that the Avs lost their game that night and the Flames had clinched a playoff spot. The Oilers mounted a comeback and won the game 3-2.

As a result of the win, the Oilers ended up in a tie with the Blackhawks, but were ranked ahead of the Hawks because of their number of wins. The Hawks won the Draft Lottery and picked Patrick Kane first overall. The Oilers picked sixth and got Gagner.

I have come to peace with the fact the Flames are not picking top 5.

Anyone watched Shinkaruk a lot this season? He dropped a bit in the rankings, I thought he was in the top 5 at one point. He has already played 3 full seasons in the WHL, does that mean he can play in the AHL sooner than most draft picks?

I still can't believe Darryl Sutter traded Phaneuf away for Ian White, Matt Stajan, Nicklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers.

What a horrible, horrible trade that was... probably Top 5 in worst trades in the last 10 years?

He traded away the only 2 players that (apparently) gave a **** (Prust and Phaneuf) for negative return - he would have been better off to waive them than to make those trades. Another reason we are winning this lottery by Jebus!

Another Phaneuf it is! I love how the young guys have been playing, but for the love of god, please put Irving back in. McDonald and Kipper have been killing our draft prospects!

He would have to spend one more full season in the WHL, much like how Baertschi did (late birthday).

However if you draft a player outside of the CHL then they are eligible to turn pro as soon as the next season.

Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm look like the most likely guys that could fall if a team reaches for need and takes Darnell Nurse and the Russian.

As long as we don't fall out of the top 7 I think we get a good player, if we are out of that then its going to be a hard one.

You are going to get a great prospect in the top half of this draft regardless. Maybe not an elite level prospect that can jump in right away, but certainly a blue chip player regardless.

I've decided I'm fine with whatever happens at this point. If it had been that we never made any moves to trade vets away, never initiated a rebuild, and it got us Jones or Mackinnon, would I be happier? I don't know if I would. Even worse if they're where they are now, and never made moves and looked to be another mediocre "Fool me 5 times" team.

The fact that these kids are showing talent and fire on the ice is thrilling to watch. That paired with our top 10 (6-8 maybe?) pick is fine.

Right now, if the flames win every game to end the season, I will cheer them for every game. I really want these kids to know what it's like to be winners in Calgary, not losers. If that means Lindholm (Or even lower) over Mackinnon, well then I'd rather have Lindholm!

It is upsetting that we are out of the top tier player, but we have 3 freaking picks. When is the last time we have had the opportunity to add 3 big time pieces from the draft in the same year.

I also believe the flames have the assets necessary to turn a 6-7 pick in to a 3-4 pick if they need to/want to.
