I am sure Fletcher traded something to break the Oiler run in 86 and 89. I don't know how many years we have to pay for it...

Yeah, the Young Guns winning those meaningless games down the stretch sure helped them develop a winning culture too... This team NEEDS a franchise/elite player - they currently have zero and they way it is going they aren't getting one at the draft either.
Anyone who thinks this team as it is is anything but a bottom feeder when the pressure is on is deluding themselves.
Welcome to Young Guns part 2... This team is stuck in purgatory.

They may not be terrible but they aren't good either. Nice and mediocre - not good enough for playoffs, not bad enough to get game changers who can help them do better than 10-12th each year.

After seeing how this team can play with its current group of youngsters, losing out on a top 5 pick isn't going to hurt as much as I thought.
Add 3 first rounders to what seems like an already legit roster (as far as rebuilds go).

I hope you guys realize that not all superstar players are drafted in the top 5. I want a top 5 pick as much as everyone on here and i know you have a higher chance of getting an elite player the higher you pick but to say we are screwed for years because of ONE draft is dumb.

I'm praying that we can swoop in and get Nichushkin now.
Lindholm will be gone and I don't want Monahan. Come on Valerei!

No, if we're at a point where they think the centers will be gone, they need to move up if possible.

Tell that to the 2007/2008 Oilers. Going from drafting 6th to 14th did nothing at all for them. I'm frustrated because if the Flames had that one more piece, I think they'd be pretty decent.
The biggest difference between Ottawa or Montreal and the Flames is that the former two had some really strong pieces already. Ottawa had Karlsson and Spezza, Montreal had Subban and Price and to a lesser extent Gallagher. The only way Flames can make the same jump is if Bartschi, Brodie and Backlund are even better than we think they are.
The plus side to all of this is some renewed faith in management's ability to scout and develop younger players and the team's sense of confidence. God dammit though, just win 1 or 2 less games would make a huge difference.

Didn't Edm win a game right at the end of a season against Calgary that gave them quite a drop in the rankings?

At this point it looks like we'll be taking Shinkaruk. Doesn't have the same oomph as a lindholm, Monahan or nichuskin.

One thing I have realized this season is that it is damn tough to finish dead last. How the oilers did it 3 years in a row is almost impossible.

I wouldn't be too upset with Shinkaruk.
He's a RW which we need and he's from Calgary to boot.

I'm just hoping some teams before us reach for Nurse and Nichushkin.
Jones
MacKinnon
Drouin
Barkov
Nichushkin
Nurse
Not totally unreasonable right? And gives us a shot at Lindholm/Monahan.

I find our rookies playing hard and scoring in their first games heartbreaking.
All I want out of this draft is a defenceman the caliber of Suter, Coburn, Phaneuf, Seabrook, Burns, Carle, Weber, Enstrom, or Byfuglien.
Or a centre like Carter, Parise, Getzlaf, Kesler, M Richards, Bergeron, or Pavelski.
But... as the cheering for losses crowd knows, those players are impossible to get outside of the top six picks. Here's hoping we lose the rest of the games this year. And finishing dead last the next season or two (or three?) as well. GO TANK FLAMES GO TANK!

I will hold on to what I said ~30 posts up. We are winning this lottery. We are owed... for the disallowed goal against the Kings in 1990, for the blown 3-0 lead in Game 7 in 1991 and Vernon taking money to blow the game, for the ridiculous 7-game losses against a pathetic Sharks team, for taking Kidd over Brodeur, for St. Louis, for Zainullan, for Gelinas (not) scoring the winner in all 4 series in 2004, for Medvedev, Fata, Saprykin, Nemisz, Chucko, Pelech, Irving, the Gilmour trade, the Phaneuf trade, for Huselius' crossbar in 2006, for the team quitting on the coach/Kipper in 2007, for Kipper returning the favour in 2008 and 2009, for Jokinen, Bouwmeester,....
