I don't really see the connection between Richard's actions and how Hollywood uses the "n-word". I don't think he used it because he was hearing it in movies and on tv.
My guess is they are taking this oppurtunity to curb the word from being used.

if something good comes out of this, that'd be alright. I've never understood how anyone of any race would want to use that awful word.

I'd like to hear what Chris Rock thinks of all that... he's one of the biggest users of the word in some of his routines... and I think they're hilarious.

is anyone seeing shades of celebrity sex tape "scandals" in all of this? Michael Richards is getting a ton of publicity now, the most i bet he's seen since Seinfeld went off the air. and seeing as how there is "no such thing as bad publicity" i wouldn't be surprised to see him milk his new 15 minutes for all they're worth

Tom Cruise. Can't speak for everyone, but I have a personal boycott against him. His behaviour, attitude, and the massive amounts of press he gets for seemingly no reason.

I hope the no "N" word idea takes off. I've always thought it's pretty counter-productive to use the word so much, and fight racism as well.

Not to let this spiral, but Chris Rock uses Cracker in a derrogatory way in his act and no one claims he is racist. I for one would rather not hear it if other racial slurrs are obviously off-limits.

Cracker isn't a term directed at all white people. It's directed at crackers. It's nothing like "the n word".
Who is actually offended by "cracker"? Crackers maybe.

I'm sorry.. (in advance)
I don't really get all the commotion.
It's a word.. Just like countless other words that people deem offensive.
Is Richards racist? Probably not, did he do something inappropriate? Yes!
I view it as Richards attacking the individuals for what he saw (black people), if it was a fat person maybe he would have said "fat piece of S," an ugly person "hideous," an Indian "paki," an asian "chink," (although for that one I'm not sure to whom it's exactly referring). By the way, why aren't those words censored? Why is it that ****** gets so much bloody attention?
Do I think calling someone a ****** as a means to be offensive wrong? Of course..
I was driving around the other day listening to the new snoop CD, buddy who hates rap got into my car, complained, and in a silly homme voice I said "chill my ******.." Am I a horrible person because of that?
I think the comments about "50 years ago hanging the individuals upside down because that's what happens when you interrupt a white man" to be much more offensive then ****** ****** ******..
I'm not sure if my point is really coming across well. I tried a similar thing in the "######" thread and came off sounding like an ass.

What does cracker mean to you? Any idea of the history of it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_cracker
Read the part where it says, "In the African American community, "cracker" is a disparaging term for whites."

It doesn't mean anything to me. That's my point. If Chris Rock uses the term cracker, it's different than Kramer using "******".
Chris Rock isn't talking about all white people when he uses the term cracker.

It's a racist term directed towards white people, I fail to see the difference other than white people don't get as upset by hearing it as others would inversely. If what you are saying is true, then Richards isn't talking about all black people when he said that, he was only talking to the 2 men in the crowd. Knowing the history of the word directly relates it to racism today. Failing to see that is ignorance.

You too! I won't watch any of his movies or read any stories on him in hopes he will just disappear forever. I can't name a celebrity I hate more than Tom Crooze.

Yeah, but it wasn't created by black people as a disparaging term for their slaves. I could give a **** less if someone calls me a cracker. However, "******" was a word created by the masters of slaves to humiliate them even more. There's a huge difference....

Okay.. if that's what you think, regardless words evolve.. We can't use the term gay now without upsetting the PC crowd.. That didn't always have homosexual denotations to it. Are rappers and gangster wannabes referring to each other as slave's when they use the term? Is Chris Rock referring to slaves when he uses the term?
Was Richards? Probably/maybe... or he was trying to be offensive in the most known way to black people, which makes it inappropriate.. Just like calling out a really fat person as FATTY! But banning the word, having it censored when other derogatory words aren't? Having people gasp if a white person uses the term.. That's a little much for me.

The "N" word was NOT created by masters of slaves to humiliate them. It was later used as that, but not created as that. In fact the original meaning was not offensive at all. So with this in mind, neither word was created with offensive intent, but now both are used with racist intent. Whether you want to be offended by it is one thing, but the fact is, it is a racist term.

If you actually believe that the connotations and history of "cracker" vs. "******" are the same, you might want to go easy on calling anyone else ignorant.

When Chris Rock uses it he is referring to inferior black people. The word ****** has not evolved. Black people are allowed to use it because it's like taking a bad part of their past and capturing it. Also, many rappers say theres a difference btw "*****z" and "******s".

Inferior? OMG - I think someone has a problem if that's how he's using the word.
Hmm... wonder what a Gay ****** to Chris Rock would be then.. or a ######ed Gay ******! That'd be some serious inferior group of people!
oh, that makes sense.. z vs. s.. my *****z.. or my *****s.. Weird... why does it get censored the same..

I'm not saying the history of each term is the same. I was making reference to the fact that it has evolved into a prejudice slurr, as per the history of the word. Like I said, neither word was created to be offensive, but they are used as such now.
