For my 10th round pick, The Slippery Grooves selects in the 2000-2002 category, The Strokes - Is This It?
Quote:
The Strokes released their debut album Is This It in the US in October 2001 on RCA after some delay due to changes made from the UK-released version (released 27th August 2001). The cover of the latter features a black-and-white photo of a gloved hand on a woman's naked backside, shown in semi-profile, and is said to reference Spinal Tap's fictitious Smell the Glove.[citation needed] The naked model on the cover was photographer Colin Lane's girlfriend at the time. The North American version replaces this with an image of particle collisions taken from a bubble chamber consisting of a curious blue and anzac and replaced the song "New York City Cops" with "When It Started". The replacement of "New York City Cops", which contains the refrain "New York City Cops, they ain't too smart", was made in good faith following the September 11 attacks.
The melodic garage rock sound of Is This It received positive reviews from both mainstream and independent publications, including 4 stars from Rolling Stone, and a 9.1 from Pitchfork Media; it made many critics' top 10 lists, and was named the best album of the year by Entertainment Weekly and TIME. NME, in an article previewing summer concerts, urged readers to attend their shows, claiming that the band was touring on the strength of some of the "best pop songs ever". The influence of 1970s CBGB stalwarts Television was noted by many reviewers.
After the release of Is This It, the band toured around the world, featuring dates in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and North America staging for the Rolling Stones. The band headlined UK's Carling Weekend festivals in 2002, largely chronicled by a relatively hard-to-find mini-documentary entitled "In Transit" which was released to members of the now-defunct "Alone, Together" fan club.
In August 2002, the band played at New York's Radio City Music Hall on a bill with The White Stripes. Jack White joined the Strokes on stage to perform the guitar solo on "New York City Cops". During that period, the band also appeared as musical guests on various late-night talk shows. Is This It yielded several singles and music videos, all of which were directed by Roman Coppola.
As of 2007, Is This It has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide.

I first saw/heard of these guys when they performed "The Modern Age" on Conan's show in the fall of 2001, and they blew me away! I think that makes 3 or 4 of my draft picks I learned about from that show. (including SCOTS and Art Brut).

saw them live back in the early 80's, then saw them just a while back at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino. They were still great. My sister insisted that we meet them after the show, so we did.
Will post this just to keep it going, then have a look at youtube. Will edit in anything I find.
Oh man, Youtube has "Godzilla" "Astronomy", "Dont fear..." of course.
"Balck Blade". Okay, see you later, I could be re living grade 10-12 for the next hour or so!
ps if anyone is offended that I chose the Heavy Metal category, feel free to move them to Rock, or Wildcard.
Boblobla asked me to make this next selection for him:
With their 10th pick, Better Late Than Never, in the Pop category selects Elton John - Honky Chateau (with a funky thingy over the 'a')...
This was a tough choice, he has quite a few good albums. I am a HUGE fan of Elton Johns music. He is batsh*t insane but he writes some great music.
Quote:
Honky Château is the fifth studio album by British singer/songwriter Elton John, released in 1972. In 2003, the album was ranked number 357 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.[1] This was the final Elton John album on the Uni label in the US and Canada before he was transferred to the MCA label. This and Elton's earlier Uni albums were reissued on the MCA label.
This is the first album since John's debut (Empty Sky) not to feature strings on any songs, except for violinist Jean-Luc Ponty on "Mellow" and "Amy". It also marks the beginning of his transition from a singer/songwriter in the mould of James Taylor, Leon Russell, or Carole King to a rock style that would become more evident on such albums as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou and Rock of the Westies.
The opening track "Honky Cat" is a New Orleans funk track reminiscent of Dr. John and Allen Toussaint and features a four-piece horn section.
Side one
1. "Honky Cat" – 5:13
2. "Mellow" – 5:32
3. "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" – 3:35
4. "Susie (Dramas)" – 3:25
5. "Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)" – 4:41
This album was released in 1983 and was nominated for five grammies. Cyndi Lauper walked away winning only one Grammy, Best new artist.
The album was ranked 494th on Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of all time list.
I loved Cyndi Lauper as a kid, most of these songs are still on my music rotation today, because they are just really fun songs.

With their 10th selection, in the Greatest Hits/Compilations category, The Rubes select Big Sugar - "Hit and Run".
Gordie Johnson and the boys were a staple of the Canadian music scene for over a decade. This compilation album does a great job of including bits and pieces from each of their albums. Big Sugar could be loud, raucous, bluesy and subtle all at the same time.
There are all the familiar hits on here and it really covers the spectrum from rock to blues, with bits of reggae sprinkled in.
Tracks:
1 - Sleep in Late
2 - Ride Like Hell
3 - I'm a Ram
4 - Dear Mr. Fantasy
5 - Diggin' a Hole
6 - If I Had My Way
7 - Opem Up Baby
8 - The Scene
9 - Better Get Used to It
10 - Turn the Lights On
11 - Red Rover
12 - Nicotina (She's All That)
13 - All Hell For a Basement
14 - I Want You Now
15 - Trouble in the City
16 - Three Minute Song
"Sleep in Late"
"Diggin' a Hole"
"The Scene"
"All Hell For a Basement" (the video for this is completely unrelated and stupid but still uses the song)
"Nicotina (She's All That)"

I saw these guys for the first time in the summer of 2004 while they were touring to promote this album. Trooper was their opening act, and it was honestly one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Just a couple hundred people rocking out under a tent pavilion at the end of June.
I don't know why it is, but April Wine has something like 6 or 7 Greatest Hits compilations and every one is missing at least one of their hits. On This one, where is "Rock Myself to Sleep"?
And I noticed yesterday that Trooper is coming to the new Stampede Casino in March (and so are the Nylons).

LOVE April Wine, btw. Easily one of my all-time personal faves.
Anyhoo... in the Punk category... Suicidal Tendencies' Lights... Camera... Revolution!
Some feel that by the time they released this album, they had crossed over from hardcore punk to thrash metal. The lines have always been pretty blurred to me, though. I could have picked a much earlier album (they were all very good), but this one is my favourite.

In the 2003-2005 category, I choose Foo Fighters - In Your Honor
Quote:
Disc One
1. "In Your Honor" – 3:50
2. "No Way Back" – 3:17
3. "Best of You" – 4:16
4. "DOA" – 4:12
5. "Hell" – 1:57
6. "The Last Song" – 3:19
7. "Free Me" – 4:39
8. "Resolve" – 4:49
9. "The Deepest Blues Are Black" – 3:58
10. "End Over End" – 5:56
Disc Two
1. "Still" – 5:15
2. "What If I Do?" – 5:02
3. "Miracle" – 3:29
4. "Another Round" – 4:25
5. "Friend of a Friend" (Dave Grohl) – 3:13
6. "Over And Out" – 5:16
7. "On The Mend" – 4:31
8. "Virginia Moon" – 3:49
9. "Cold Day In The Sun" – 3:20
10. "Razor" (Dave Grohl) – 4:53
An album in 2 parts. Disk 1 is the rock disk, kicking things off with the title track, "In Your Honor". The whole disk is solid, with a mix of songs that all resonate with Grohl's vocals and powerful guitar.
Disk 2 is the acoustic disk, featuring guest performances from artists such as John Paul Jones and Norah Jones. I found this disc bit harder to adjust to after the hard driving first disk, but after listening a few times it is easy to find myself just letting the music take me away.
