Not sure exactly, but isn't nitrogen narcosis different than "the bends"?

Good point Tron. I've never been deep enough to experience it myself, but I was under the impression that Nitrogen Narcosis left a bit of a residual effect on the body. I seem to recall them saying that if you experienced it you should surface and discontinue diving for the day. Going to shallower water helps a bit, but.......... aw crap......... I just don't know.

I would presume so. . . over time however. That is the difference between diving and drinking heroin beer though. In diving the body is pressurized. In the heroin beer (presuming some sort of gas is pressurized into it) the body is not under the same pressure and once that beer leaves the keg/line it is under standard ambient pressure. That being said there would still be some "dissolved" gases (there always are) but I highly doubt that would cause any extra effect. Don't misunderstand me however, I'm a chemist not a diver. I'm 100% confident on the oxidation of nitrogen BS but this stuff I'm a little more unsure of.

I just love how the term heroin beer has become part of the common Calgarian parlance. I meet new Flames fans here all the time and everyone uses the same term.

the points i made were assuming it was nitrogen, which everyone thought, and now with kybosh's lil' explanation it makes sense

but how likely is it that the gas used is strictly one component? even without oxidation, couldnt there still be possible effects from whatever the gas used is? (notice the possible)

i agree with kybosh that the effect comes with the atmosphere of the 'dome

it would be interesting to see what the effects of using different transport methods/combinations would do to the "potentness" of the beer, from an inert to something like chlorine...........not that im trying to kill anyone

I don't know about you but I prefer my lungs to not dissolve .

Anyway, I really have no idea what the reason is but 3 beers at the dome gets me truly hammered.

But that doesn't explain why it doesn't work with the cans or the highballs.

And yes the Heroin Beer is strong, I don't have the enzyme that digests alcohol so I can tell pretty fast when the alcohol is higher. I am 100% sure it's not the effect of the Dome. I was at the totally miserable Phoenix 1-0 loss game and it was quiet and depressed and the heroin beer got me. I can feel it hit my system because I don't have any alcohol dehydrogenase (or at least very very little) in my body.

Personally, dome beer is more like Carling Black Ice (by Molson) - the super-cheap discount 6.1% alcohol beer that's an ice beer so it's strong but tastes as bland as normal beer.

Well does anyone home brew? Maybe we can find some sort of alcohol level testing kit and find out what the alcohol content is of heroin beer. I know I'd be interested in seeing the results.

Nitrogen Narcosis and the bends are two totally different things.
Nitrogen Narcosis is a state much like drunkeness that is brough on by nitrogen in your blood being at high pressure (your blood is also at this pressure). THe bends (which you use dive tables for) is caused by this nitrogen bubling out of your blood when you surface to fast. Blood can dissolve more nitrogen at higher pressures, so when you relive that pressure the nitrogen bubbles out and kills you.
