The expression sounds stupid because nearly everybody gets it wrong.
The original form of the expression is, ‘You can't eat your cake and have it.’ Once you've eaten your cake, you don't have a cake anymore. It's about the futility of trying to have an either/or choice both ways.
If people would stop and think before opening their cakeholes (either to talk or to eat), they would see that this is the case. The saying makes sense that way round, and doesn't make any sense the other way; but many people are so used to spouting cliches without thinking that they keep the wrong version in circulation from sheer force of habit.
