Grabs his first goal of the season. Also a +2 despite Montreal scoring 3 ES goals.

Putting on an audition it seems.

Is it possible to do pick-swaps in the NHL like in the NBA? Where the trade is for the option to switch places in a given round?

Personally I'm down for trading Russell AND Wideman for Hamonic, but if it were possible to do pick swaps it might help.

Wideman (1.5 retained) + the right to swap 2nd round picks in 2016 (the islanders get the better of our or their pick in the 2nd round, we get the other one)

Is that something that's legal under the CBA?

Another thing I'd love to see done in the NHL is 'protected' picks. Like we send a 1st to the islanders but we say it's "lottery protected" as in, if we miss the playoffs, we keep the pick and the isles get our pick the following year. Usually these protections have an end date, something like: if the pick has not been conveyed in two seasons the team shall send their 2nd and 3rd round pick in the following year.)

I don't think that's the right move for this trade but it's a wrinkle I'd love to see added to trades in the NHL.

Sure, just make the picks conditional. I'm sure I've seen trades before where there was the option on the pick.

Edit: example
November 3, 1999

New Jersey Devils acquire
Claude Lemieux
conditional draft pick (2000 #57-Matt DeMarchi)
Devils option to swap 2000 1st round picks (#22-David Hale)

Colorado Avalanche acquire
Brian Rolston
2001 conditional pick
Devils option to swap 2000 1st round picks (#27-Martin Samuelsson)

Well Arizona tried:
http://arizonasports.com/story/46142...ravis-hamonic/

Quote:
“Any time a good player becomes available on the market, it becomes incumbent on managers to reach out and see if there’s a match,” Maloney said. “Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be at this point with us.”

Maloney said it’s simply a matter of trade value. Hamonic currently plays on New York’s top defensive pairing with Nick Leddy. To deal Hamonic, Islanders GM Garth Snow would likely be looking for a player to replace him.

“The last things Garth is looking for is draft picks and prospects,” Maloney said. “They want to find someone to slide in and help that team win right now. A lot of people are talking about the Rangers and Capitals and Canadiens, but that team is good enough to contend right now so you don’t want to weaken it through a trade.

“I empathize with Garth right now because it’s a difficult situation.”

Maloney wouldn’t comment on what he might have offered, but it should be clear that offering either Michael Stone or Connor Murphy, Arizona’s top two right-handed defensemen, in a package wasn’t enough to land Hamonic, 25, who has five years left (including this season) on a team-friendly deal that will pay him an average of $3,857,142 per year.

Hamonic had five goals and 28 assists last season for New York, but has put up just three assists, perhaps as he struggles with his personal situation.

“I sure I’m one of 29 other managers that have reached out to him,” Maloney said of Snow. “It’s no secret (Hamonic) would like to come west and we’re in the west. There are some options out there they are evaluating and I would expect them to do something, but Garth is not just going to trade him to trade him. He’s got to get the right value and unfortunately, we just don’t seem to have what they’re looking for.”

^^I can't believe a gm is so open about acquiring a specific player from another team.

To be fair he might just be trying to increase the price for Edmonton and Calgary, two division rivals

HNIC:
Kings, Detroit and Anaheim tried to get into Hamonic trade talks but were told they weren't a fit
Flames very interested, TJ Brodie was the ask, which was non starter. Cox: Flames may consider moving Hamilton but that is complicated
Oilers ask was Nurse
Friedman: people will not be surprised if 3-way trade because of the limited destinations
Jets ask was Trouba

Is Hamilton for Hamonic such a total joke? You would get a way friendlier cap hit. What if they kicked in a high draft pick?

I get that Hamilton still has huge upside and I guess that's reason enough not to do it. It's also possible that 2 years from now you would look at this trade and wish you'd pulled the trigger.

It's interesting to speculate. Maybe Flames a little disappointed with what they got this summer?

I find it extremely hard to believe that BT would trade for Hamilton in the summer, sign him to a huge deal, then deal him in the first quarter of the first season of that deal.

Hamilton is younger with a much higher ceiling. I'm a big fan of Hamonic's but trading Hamilton for him right now doesn't make much sense at all.

Would anyone be opposed if a Flames trade involved say....Rasmus Andersson?

Personally I'd loathe it for a while but Hamonic is 25 and the kind of D man the Flames need moving forward. I mean the Flames have Hickey and Kylington to develop yet...

I don't think Treliving would do it because he's been adamant about not spending future assets for now assets. And unlike Hamilton who is 22, Tradin a potential force on the back end for a mid term fix seems out of the scope that Treliving would sacrifice.

I guess Im saying this in the spirit of conversation.

Russell and Andersson for Hamonic?

Never give up on Brad the Wizard. If there was a way that the Flames could secure Hamonic at the cost of Wideman, Russell and maybe another depth forward - I would do a deal like that. Can you imagine our backend anchored by Gio, Brodie, Hamilton and Hamonic ( and with three of those four being 25 or less). Make it so Brad.

Btw, in a radio interview I heard today Butch Goring (remember his helmet) who does PBP for the Islanders was calling Hamonic their #1 defenceman. So Garth Snow is going to be asking a lot in any trade.

Hamonic is more than a now asset though. He is the same age as Brodie so he is now and later. I would give up any D prospect plus Russell for him no question.

Also not a chance a Dougie is traded this early and if it happens j expect a big + to come with Hamonic like Dal Colle/Strome big

I hate to say it but you deal Hamilton now and run. He could work out or he could be the next Bouwmeester, I personally would not want to wait around to find out... that contract we gave him could single handily kill us for years to come.

... there's something that doesn't sit right with this guy.

LOL the only contract on this team that has a good chance of haunting the Flames is the Giordano contract. Hamilton is going to be a very good defenseman.

I expect that all these Hamilton doubters will be eating their words by the end of this season. There is a bigger adjustment than most think when a d- man switches not only teams, but conferences. Hamilton is just now rounding into form for the Flames.
