My personal favourite as far as acoustic type songs is "Closer to the Sun" by Slightly Stoopid. Amazing band, great guitar work imo, my kind of campfire song, as it were.

I woudl recommend "Times like These" by the Foo-fighters. Its a great song and easy to play as well.
^ I've learned pretty much entirely off tablature. I can read music, but tab is just much easier IMO. Unfortunately there is no substitute for practice and time though...

I never had a lesson, and can't read music (I collect tabs). I think I would have advanced a lot faster if I did take lessons. Practice, practice, practice.

A decent acoustic guitar is not expensive now - for $250 to $300 you can get a decent new guitar. Even less at a pawn shop.
Broke a string last night, trying to set a strange alternate tuning for Teenage Riot. I guess I should always tune DOWN to the new note.

Been sick all weekend, and I was sitting here with my guitar, so I thought I'd bump this and see if anyone has some more fun song ideas.

The entire Master of Puppets album is fun to play. Master of Puppets is an easy song to play, only a few "hard" parts. Battery is fun to play as well. It took me hours of practice but I can now play it at full speed. Once you can play Battery at full speed it is super fun to play. Acoustic songs I like to play are "Realms of Death" and "Angel" by Judas Priest. "Got the Time" by Anthrax is also fun to play.
Any Rage Against the Machine song is fun to play as well, but be careful, when I play I go crazy and start to break stuff.

Eric Clapton - Layla is always a fun one to play. Try the unplugged one too, it's quite different.

if you're a little ways beyond a beginner, two that really got me out of a rut on my electric were:
harlem nocturne by danny gatton
and
cause we've ended as lovers by jeff beck

If you have a capo try playing Take My Hand by Shawn McDonald, it's a really interesting song to play, I mean the actual chords and stuff aren't but there's slapping and what not involved.
Also give Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots, it's a decently easy song, and there's a really gnarly youtube version of it that I've been trying to figure out.

She sells Sanctuary
D, C, G.
at nauseum.
Cuts like a knife, Bryan Adams
D, G, C
A and Bm.
you'll know the changes when ya hear them during the song.
Lunatic Fringe - Red Rider
Bm, A, D are the chords.
listen to the song for the changes. you'll notice it involves a little bit of picking. something great to learn with if you want to get the feel of different strings.
Wanted: Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi.
except for the intro and a couple of times through out the song, there is a chord run thats a little hectic for a beginner. however the rest of the song is virtually
D, G, C,
something to play if/when you get more comfortable.
Heat of the moment - Asia
A, B, G, A, D
Barred chords
this one involves a bit more in the strumming pattern but if you listen to the song, you'll easily get the hang of it.
Drift away - Dobie Gray/Uncle Kracker
C, G, D, Am are the chords.
for the most part.

You're going to have to give me some tips on how to play Purple Rain acoustically. I've been trying to play some other Prince songs. Hard as hell. Prince is one of the best acoustic musicians I've ever heard even though it's also nearly impossible to find any of his acoustic stuff because it's only bootlegged from live performances. The guy can do insane things with rhythm, funk, and effortless muting all while singing.

The hammering on with the pinky across four frets and then moving up one string and doing it again and then diagonally is pretty damn hard for the classic Layla solo/riff. I miss it every now and then. My pinky might as well be a vestigial digit.
