As long as this is front loaded say 8,8,8,6,4,4 or something like that he becomes very trade able in the last few years if the cap hit isn't worth it for his play.

A great deal for the next 5 years, and hopefully flexibility for the last 2

Could make trading him easier down the road though. You deal him to a team with cap space they get to cap floor but only have to pay him "x" amount of dollars.

Yup, I agree. The more I look at my spreadsheet, the writing is on the wall that Hudler and Russell are gone after this season. The only way we keep Russell is if we can trade off Wideman.

But....Hudler, Jones, Russell, and Hiller = $15M coming off the books. If you could thrown Widemand and Raymond onto that pile, too, that would be another $8M.

...Plenty of room to sign Mony and Johnny long term.

I think the next step in the D development is for Russell, Wideman, and Engellend to be slowly phased out for Morrison, Hickey, Anderssen, and Kylington. That will happen over the next 2-3 seasons.

Really like this deal.

We always heard this about Jarome and although he's not the dominant player he once was he is still contributing quite well. Gio's deal should end when he is 38 I believe and Jarome is currently 38. I also think it's a lot easier for a dman to be effective later in their careers compared to a power forward.

Or perhaps Wideman at the end of this year. He has two years left, but I could see a trade if he has another strong year. Even if they let his contract expire, that'll be in time to require the money to sign Bennett possibly to a long term contract. We also lose David Jones' contract then (replaced probably with an entry level (say Poirier).

I believe this is the first time the Flames have locked up a player in one of those pay later for today's performance. It's one of those juggling acts any team that fancies themselves as becoming a cup contender must face as the flip side is losing the player and taking a step back. Good to have this done before the season so the uncertainty doesn't linger.

Ortio stepping up this season and stealing the number one job would be huge for this team and our cap hit. We've got 7.9 million tied up in Ramo and Hillier, having a young goalie make one or both of those guys expendable would go a long way to saving some cap space, at least short term.

This pretty much sets our window too. We have 3-4 years. 2015-16 may not be the year, but we'll have to make something happen by 2019-20 before we hit the point of having to dump core pieces.

Happy to see it done, but I don't think it's that much of a "sacrifice" from what he would have gotten as a UFA next off-season. I was hoping for 5 x $7 mill so this isn't far off. With the salary cap possibly flat lining the next few years it's a manageable deal for the Flames and a smart deal for Giordano. Giordano going into next season without a contract would have been very risky for him.

I hate to say it but this contract will be an anchor the last two years. Paying a 37 year old defenseman almost 7m when we will need that money for the young guys will be a problem. The chances of him being a top pairing guy are low. The only question is can we live with that just to get a lower hit over the next 4 years. Apparently BT can.

Disagree. I think he easily could have gotten $8M for the same term in UFA.

How so? He would have been the best defenseman in free agency

Considering most elite defenseman have been dealing with the best players in the world since they were 21, Gio had a cake walk until his later twenties.

He's still making more in one year than I'll make in my entire life.

Not to mention that it is US bucks... Convert that to Can dollars and its close to 10 Million per right now.. Assuming the buck stays low for a few years he will not be hurting and it will be close to his original asking price
