Vejays on Granville and 10th or 11th is outstanding and Octopuses Garden on Cornwell is a great sushi joint.
There is many nice "joints" in Vancouver

Horizons in QE park, although the food has lost some of its sparkle, Quatro on 4th is good although the La Buca on Mcdonald is better imho, the resteraunt on the roof of the Landmark on Robson is very nice and the Beachhouse on Dundrave Beach is excellent. Steer clear of the Watermark, it has tanked in the last year.

I live right by Cardero's in Coal Harbour so I go there pretty frequently. Good service and it's big enough you can usually get a spot. The patio is beautiful this time of year. It's a little pricey and the food is good, but not great. Lift just up the water and past the Westin is also really good too... pricier but great view and slightly better food.

I also really like Central Bistro on Denman, which is just off English Bay.

Trendier places: Chambar (French/Belgian) is pretty good (Beatty St. by the Queen E); Salt Tasting Room (more of an appetizer place) (Gastown); Coast (Seafood heavy but not exclusively) (Alberni off Burrard) .

There are a series of restaurants throughout the city under the 'La Buca' umbrella which is great Italian food. http://www.labuca.ca/

All of these are good date places.

If you're looking to just hang out and grab some beers and pub food, try The Mill in Coal Harbour or the Elephant and Castle on Burrard and W. Hastings.

I'm not close to downtown, so I don't eat there a lot. But someone mentioned Steamworks earlier in the thread - I second this. I love that place. It's nice, but not over-the-top fancy and I love the menu.

My coworkers and I have been talking about Gotham's too, still never been though. I love steak and burgers, and it's supposed to be one of the best. Still, even if you're not into wine (someone mentioned $220+ for wine), it still sounds pretty pricey.

Yew in the Four Seasons ... not as pricey as you might think.

I really like Il Giardino on Hornby Street. Great Italian. Pricey though.

Hate it. Horrible sushi, overpriced and terrible service. Amongst the worst sushi in Kits, stay away unless you're only going for a the cheesy "atmosphere" and your date is a Japanese exchange student who love anime and tokyo pop!

Personal favorites are
-Chambar (best mussels)
-Glowbal and the rest of the Glowbal Group places (Coast, Italian Kitchen, Tratoria etc.) Consistent and fairly well priced.
-Vij's (No reservations and always a wait. Put your name down, go to the back have some drinks and eat some free tasters. Make the wait part of the date)

And my local go to's in Kits which are good date spots are:
-Flying Tiger
-Abigails Party
-Watermark
-New Bohemian (25% of bottles of wine on Monday/Tuesday. Fairly quiet and intimate)
A good ocean front walk with good food nearby is a fail proof date. All good spots for a post dinner drink too, if you decide to eat sushi or something else near by.

Just remembered 2 more:
-Seasons in the Park (great view & in Queen E Park. Great dinner/walk in the park combo)
-Diamond in Gastown: Great selection of classic coctails, nice view of the classic brick/cobblestone gastown charm from 2nd floor looking over it.

For Japanese, I recommend Sushi Town on Hastings. Crazy cheap and very good quality..

I've had some good sushi, but combined with price and quality as weighing factors, that's gotta be the best.

Best spot in Vancouver IMO. It's funny, I hadn't really checked out a lot of Gastown until earlier this year (Despite being here for 4 years now)... but man there's a lot of great little joints in that part of town. It's honestly one of those places where you can walk down the street, walk into a random place... and chances are you've done well (although there are some crappy spots.. but that's like anywhere).

If you're going to go expensive there a bunch of places in Yaletown that fit the bill. Goldfish is pretty good (although I'm biased because I bartended there awhile ago... gotta pay off that student debt). Salt was alright too. A Kettle of Fish (it's on Pacific and Burrard I think..) was always a fav of mine.

As for Las Margaritas...meh. One of my ex-GF's worked there as a hostess and told me horror stories about some of the stuff that happened in the kitchen there RE: Food. Somebody mentioned Donna Cato's earlier for Mexican... food is much better there.

Moral of the story, go to gastown.

Spot on for me too. Been here 3 years, and finally starting to give Gastown the attention. A lot of gems down there.
Main Street has a lot of good, lesser known spots as well.
Locus is a another place worth mentioning in this thread. http://www.locusonmain.com

Memphis Blues is a great date spot... I guess, depending on what type of person you are. It could be considered more of a double date place, or somewhere you go with some friends or whatever... but it's still awesome... and fun.

Toshi sushi on Main and 16th. Price per quality cannot be beat.

Sha Lin Noodle House on Cambie and Broadway price per quality also cannot be beat.

For a date though... downtown... I would have to recommend Kettle of Fish for its amazing interior and reasonable fine dining prices. A great place to go for a cocktail is the Sands on Denman. It has a really kitschy lounge feel and you have a wonderful view of English Bay.

hah, guess we'll have to disagree. I was there two weeks ago and the food was outstanding, and the service was good. I think its cool to actually go to sushi place that doesn't try to by the standard "traditional" style that vancouver has 1000's of.

DB Bistro is Lumiere's sister restaurant. They share the same kitchen, and the food is also quite good, but the prices are lower because it's less fancy.
