So sorry for your loss. It makes it that much harder when they're still so young and full of life.

It's never easy when one has to put a family dog down. It doesn't matter how old they are as the emotional pain is the same in the end. They become a part of ones own family and their passing leaves a gaping hole.

My heart goes out to you Reaper. Being there when they put your dog to sleep is the greatist gift an owner can give to his dog. Comforting her in those last moments made her passing a peaceful one. As painful as it was you did make the right decison in the end.

My Condolences Reaper. It was one of the toughest things I have ever done. It has been just over 3 months for us now I still have moments when I think about losing my girl and get choked up. It just goes to show how much of the family that our pets are to us. All my best

She seemed to be managing okay with the anti-inflammatories and we were all set to try chiropractic adjustments. By Monday night she was experiencing full paralysis and could no longer move about unassisted. Yesterday morning my wife took her to the vet as Winnie could no longer urinate or defecate and she had lost the ability to stand. The vet recommended putting Winnie to sleep as there was no hope of meaningful recovery. My wife came and got me from work. We said our goodbyes to Winnie and she passed away with her head in my hands. Today, I struggle with not crying at work over the loss of my baby girl who was only 4 years old.
So sorry to read this. As a fellow dog owner, my thoughts are with you.

One of the things that helped me after Biscotti passed away was that I wrote a letter to him, put a milk bone in the envelope and had it cremated with him. Writing the letter was a nice way to put my thoughts together about a wonderful dog.

Quality of life is so important. It makes me very proud of people that can make the toughest decision for a wee creature that is dependent upon them. Know that what you did was right. Never doubt that for one moment. Also realise that you will never forget them. The feeling of being lost will go with time and better memories will strengthen you. I am so very sorry for your loss.

What Suzles said. It probably doesn't seem like it now but your thoughts and memories will turn positive in time. One day you will just start smiling and chuckling to yourself when you think of the good times you had with Winnie.

So sorry Reaper, that is one of the harder things to go through, I've been there too. Your house won't feel the same for awhile, but it does get easier.
My condolences.

I can literally feel your pain Reaper. We lost our 7 year old Boxer "Odin" a little over 2 weeks ago to a brain aneurysm. It was sudden and unexpected and I didn't even get to say goodbye. I still come home from work everyday and look for his ugly mug in the window waiting for me. I think about him every day, but each day I am able to focus more and more on the good memories with less and less pain doing it.

We can learn a lot from our pets.

I feel for you TheGrimm. It's rough, for sure. I'm really grateful I got to say goodbye. I'd be even more of a mess if I didn't get that chance.

I both hate & love this thread.

I hate reading the dispair, and sadness of others as they lose a pet so close, yet I love the huge feelings of compassion both from their best friends (owners), and those anonymous friends online in this little flames community.

I fear losing lil Bobo.

I'm doing better every day. I've already been laughing about what a weirdo she was. It's still hard when I walk in the door or at bedtime though. I catch myself thinking about her being there and how I have to move her out of my warm spot in bed before I lay down.

Appropriate for this thread, "The Gift Of A Great Dog" in The LA Times today. A columnist remembers . . . .

Great article. I cannot imagine the grief when my daughter's dogs pass - she got them a little more than a year after her accident, in the thick of the awfulness and as silly as it might sound to some, I know that there were days her dogs are what helped her get through some pretty awful times. She is their second owner - we privately adopted them, and they're getting up there in years - they're both 7 this year. They are her world and she is theirs.

Very sorry Reaper for your loss.

It was the 2 year anniversary of my young dog's tragic death on Sunday. It's weird; I go through the whole year without grieving. I think reflectively here and there with both thoughts of sadness and memories of joy. But come May 12th, at some point later in the day when I've mostly forgotten about it, the tears come out without warning.

His was my first ever experience of loss. Does anyone else go through these moments, long after passing?
