Not sure I agree
The drama pick to pick of team by team not moving up starts to build who could move up.
Then when a team moves back and takes the place of a team you expect, you know that the missing team won one of the lotteries, but you don't know which one.
The only way that would blow up in their face is if all three lotteries were won by teams out of the top 3, but even then we wouldn't know who has first overall until you got to the top 3.

Not saying they're going to - not even remotely close. I'm saying there is only so much room in the system, and a regular stream is a great way to go.
Next year they are going to have:
New guy
Ortio
Gillies
Poulin
McDonald
Simpson
IF they draft another, they will have 4 guys that are 22 or younger and will not have enough spots for them.
There is still plenty of time to draft the guys that will be behind McDonald and Simpson in the pipeline.
The Flames' goalie problem is at the top, not in the young prospect department.

I'm the opposite. IMO, it's much easier to tell a guy with that competitive/nasty edge to dial it back a notch, versus telling a passive player to play with more intensity.
Typically, that killer instinct cannot be taught. You have it, or you don't.

The hit I'm okay with but him laughing as he was escorted off the ice is a bad look IMO.

Switching up the format this time since there's been some chatter about what happens with various records over the remaining games. The below is the Flames expected draft pick for all possible outcomes over the final 5 games, along with the average expectation in the final row.
(Draft pick odds using Enoch Root's standings-pick percentages combined with sportsclubstats.com's final standings probabilities for each potential Flames remaining record as of today)

So, if the Flames end up 7-9, which D man do they take? Juolevi or Sergachyev? Or do they take a Mike McLeod or gamble on Gauthier?
I'd go with Segachyev or Mcleod myself, but there's this Rubstov as well who creeping into my radar. Uusally I am all over the Russian draft stock every year but outside of Korshkov, I've got no idea. Rubstov looks good though, big, fast, LH Center (doesn't really tick the boxes of Flames needs) gritty, could be a steal.

For me, for the Flames I see a top 9 right now: Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi, Tkachuk, Dubois, Chychrun, Nylander, Sergachev and Juolevi. So Id take one of those guys. It's hard to say right now who will be there 7-9 out of those guys. I could see any of those guys going top 5 in certain scenarios. Quite likely someone will slip into that 7-9 range that you weren't expecting.

I think McLeod has some very good upside. He is sort of flying under the radar, but I would love that pick. The kid has wheels, and plays a solid two way game. He is big and shoots right as well. I think he would fit in perfectly in our top 6.

I've been on his bandwagon for a while now. Big fan of what I can find to watch of him.

My top nine for the Flames.
1. Austin Mathews. No brainer, the best player in the draft.
2. Patrik Laine. Right handed shot, unbelievable wrister, should be elite goal scorer.
3. Jesse Puljujarvi. Another RH shot RW, unreal hockey IQ.
4. Pierre Luc Dubois. An absolute complete player, can he play RW?
5. Alex Nylander. Has Gaudreau like skill, RH RW that fills a need. Might be the steal of this draft when all is said and done.
6. Matthew Tkatchuk. I see a lot of him, he is a high end playmaker with jam. Would look good as our 2nd line LW feeding Bennett or Monahan.
7. Michael McLeod. Some will say it is a reach but I don't think so. RH shot, one of the fastest players you will ever see, just does everything well. Underrated and would fill a huge need for the Flames. He plays C now but almost surely would be a RW on the Flames.
8. Jakob Chychrun. Will be gone by this selection. The best D man of the draft.
9. Olli Juolevi. I think he has better offensive gifts than Chychrun, not as good overall though.

Honestly, I'd be shocked if McLeod becomes a better player than Gautier.
6'2 and 180lbs isn't big enough to be "big" in any league higher than the CHL. 32 goals in 120 games doesn't exactly say "good shot". Not when Gautier has 79 goals in 122 games.
He's fast, all-around, and has good character. But he just doesn't have the offensive awareness to justify a being top 7 pick.
I doubt the Flames will be picking lower than 6th. I think Tkachuk, Dubois, and Chychrun are the 3 we should be debating over.

Doesn't make much sense to me to move him to RW. His strengths are skating, faceoffs, defensive play and passing. His weakness is finishing. He's very much a prototypical 2nd or 3rd line shutdown centre. I don't see how his skill set would be better on the wing.
IMO he wouldn't make much sense as the Flames pick, we are quite deep at centre. Would rather have Tkachuk, Dubois, Nylander, Chychrun, Sergachev or Juolevi personally.

Matthews is a good player, and would help this team quite a bit.
However, I really really like beating the Oilers without a #1 overall.

This is exactly what I have been thinking is likely - though I'm sure the Flames have their own list, based on all the lists and articles out there and with place in the standings, the Flames will probably end up about 5th, drop a spot in the lottery and take whichever of those 3 is left in what increasingly seems to the "2nd tier", with some debate as to whether it's Juolevi or Chrychrun as the dman in that grouping.
And Nylander or Juolevi come into focus if the Flames fall to 7th or 8th. Either way you get a high end scoring winger for the top 6 or a defenceman to round out the top 4 (unless they hit the jackpot and get Mathews which is a good problem to have).
Would be nice if they dropped another spot or two in the standings to a starting position of 4th so they have that extra insurance not to drop too far. Dubois is the guy I am realistically hoping for. Top 3 would be nice, but this is the Flames and a draft lottery so let's be real.

Not a bad list, though I think Rubtsov is a better prospect than McLeod.

I see a lot of Tkachuk and I would take Nylander over him for sure.
