I might be assuming here, but the NHL doesn't do expansion on short notice. Re-location? well yeah. At the earliest, the 2017 draft would be the draft they hit.

Back to topic anyway
Loads of rumblings on Jonathan Dahlen (in Sweden) I have only seen him on one draft site can't remember which one
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=212368
He plays against men and is putting up some descent points...
All teams seems after him in Sweden and I believe Frölunda might have won the race and their scouting is top notch....
I'm not saying he is top 20 material but could easily be a round 4 pick who turns stud !

Because these things aren't sprung upon teams moments before the draft. Expansion, expansion drafts, how the entry draft seeding would work for new teams would be sorted and worked out several years in advance. This isn't how things work.
It's pure crazy.

I would assume that at this point, if the NHL was to go ahead with expansion on one or two teams, it would be for the start of the 2017/18 season. Next draft will probably be affected (if the expansion is a go at that time).
I would also hope that they don't automatically aware 1st and 2nd overall picks. Give them 4 and 5, I would say.
The NHL I think is different now than the last expansion sets. I see quite a number of decent vets unable to find a team and head on over to Europe to play the rest of their careers. I see a lot more young players entering the NHL and doing well than ever before (well, at least since the early 80's when I was old enough to remember as a kid).
I think there is a lot more talent that these teams are going to be able to pluck out of other teams, as well as UFAs in need of a job. Wouldn't surprise me if they become more like the Florida Panthers rather than the Atlanta Thrashers. I do think Bettman has a point in that these teams need a better chance of success off the get-go in order to draw enough fans to make them sustainable, but awarding the first and second overall is a bit silly to me. Let them 'earn it' the following season or two, just like San Jose, Anaheim, etc. Now those are model franchises.
If the NHL thinks a city is strong enough to have an expansion franchise, then they HAVE to be strong enough to go through a couple of rough-ish seasons in which they draft high.
Outside of Edmonton - the perennial high pick club - I can't see too many other franchises strong enough to finish in the bottom of the standings and drop down another 2 spots - especially if the lotteries push them down even further. Vancouver is a team that is probably on the way to last or second-last place position in the next couple of seasons - can they really afford to pick 5th or 6th? And if they can't, I can't imagine Carolina, Phoenix, Nashville, and some other clubs that aren't all that healthy as it is now.
Either way, this year is safe for sure. There is absolutely no way that the NHL board of governors would be passing some resolution awarding the top picks to an expansion franchise when teams have already 'sold' past the trade-deadline, and moves have been made in accordance with that. Just seems completely unfair at this point.
Now Calgary, make this the last time you pick this late.
Sorry Oilers, for the first time in 10 seasons, you just might be guaranteed to lose a first overall pick. I predict the top prospects that year will be able to do 100 pull-ups.

Auston Matthews season comes to a surprising end in Switzerland.
The ZSC Lions were ranked #1 and swept by the #8 team.
Matthews finished with 46 points in 36 games (regular season and good for 4th ppg) and 3 assists in 4 playoff games.
Matthews also finished 2nd in NLA MVP voting to Pierre Marc Bouchard.

So, is there anywhere Matthews can go and play for the rest of the season, or is that not an option?
For instance, a junior team that holds his rights or anything like that?

Crawford compares Matthews' agility to Gaudreau. Says no flaws in game, size, speed, vision, creativity. Looks similar to rookie Anze Kopitar and 19YO Jamie Benn. Biggest difference between Swiss league and NHL is more time and space VS one-on-one races/puck battles.

Going to be a long 3 months for Matthews before the draft.
The Finns are starting their play off runs next week, both start a week Friday. They won't meet each other unless both their teams make the final. Wonder if the fact that they are still playing and can further their stock in the post season might make the top order a little closer? Got to make some difference right, if Laine has an unbelievably clutch play off series and wins a title/play off MVP award?

So basically Matthews is every player in the league rolled into one.

I expect the Oilers to finish strong, now that McDavid is back. It will be a slug-fest to see who can tank the greatest. Calgary, Winnipeg, and Toronto are all in the running.

I don't believe a player can join a junior team this late in the season. There is a roster deadline in the WHL of February 10. It's possible there might be some rule that allows him to join them late if he was on a reserve list or something.
Everett holds his WHL rights. Right now, they're second in their Division behind Seattle, so they will be in the playoffs.
If nothing else, I'd expect Matthews to play for Team USA at the World Championships, but that's still almost two months away.

In case you're wondering, Auston Matthews can't join Everett now that season over in Switzerland. Had to be on roster by NHL trade deadline.
And ZSC Lions have announced they won't bring back Crawford after his #1 team got swept in the 1st round.

NHL Mock Draft: March Madness Edition
"The Order
The NHL Draft Order for this mock draft was determined by team points per game up to March 8th, 2016 with the simulation ran once via Future Considerations’ NHL Draft Lottery Simulator.
For the rest of the order, outside the lottery picks, Tankathon, was utilized. For the purposes of this mock draft, no trades were conducted."
- Leafs win the lottery and don't stray from the consensus.
- Canes move up to 2nd slot
- CBJ nabs 3rd position
The latter two end up with Flying Finns.
Flames select 4th and nab Tkachuk.
Find out how it all shakes down, March Madness style....

Probably a good thing for Matthews, his draft status won't be hurt not playing. He can head home, rest and heal up, start working out and get ready for the World Championship.

Question, why does an NHL date have any relevance to an un-drafted player going from Swiss Pro to major junior?

Does seem weird. I wonder if he meant to say the WHL trade deadline.
