Never watched the show before, but got caught up on Season 1 - 4, having finished watching the last episode 5 minutes ago. I still have chills, not what I was expecting at all. Definitely a new favorite for me. Wow.

Was anyone else happy with the end of season 4 not only because it was well done, but because it meant no more Rita dragging the series down like an anchor?

I liked the character of Rita. She kept Dexter look normal. She was part of his mask and was intrical to the show. The show is going to be so much different with her out of the picture and Dexter being lost without her.
He always used her to fall back on and for the first time ever, he will feel guilty about what happened.

I just recently started watching this show because a friend of mine wouldn't stop raving about it. So I borrowed Season 1 from her and I love it. I have a lot of catching up to though.

**Warning: Spoilers**
I lost alot of respect for Dexter's character in the last season.
He kept toying with Arthur instead of killing him right away like he should have.
Because of that Rita is dead. I agree her character is annoying, but she was a fox.
I actually liked the previous season better with Jimmy Smits.
That was an interesting dynamic (the serial killing duo) until it fell apart at the end.
I hope the next season is similar to the first and revolves around Dexter killing bad guys in each episode rather than him trying to 'find himself' or 'get to know himself better'
I fear it will mainly be about him and trying to cover 'kyle butlers' tracks.

Got my hands on the screener DVD's of Season 5. Watched the first three episodes back to back to back. Couldn't stop watching.
Man, it's good to have Dexter back. Won't give away anything about the new episodes, there's no point. It's best to go in fresh.
Season 5 starts on Sunday.

Did you come across these DVDs through a connection? Or are they on the intertubes?

Thru work. I co host an entertainment podcast each week and we have signed up to get screener DVD's and other cool stuff from HBO Canada and Movie Central. It's pretty sweet.

Oh, could not disagree with you more on nearly all of this post. Season 3 was probably the weakest of a strong bunch. It had its moments, but I thought it was pretty average overall. Season 4 and 2 are my favorites EASILY.
Also, I don't want to see this show going back to Dexter just killing off bad guys. We've seen that done before. We've seen stories of vigilantes time and time again. I never want to see a repeat of Season 1. We need more exploration into Dexter's character and based on what I have seen in the first 3 episodes in Season 5, that's where we are going. Dexter is feeling guilty for the first time in his life and he is looking for help.
The only thing that I agree with was Dexter's responsibilty for Rita's death. Yes, he could have killed Trinity right away, but once he found out he was a family man, he needed to know how to juggle both his lives. He was having trouble back at home and wanted to learn from Trinity. Once he found out Trinity was no different, Dexter decided to pounce and of course, we now know it was too late.

Not to mention, you likely have to be very careful where you talk about what happens, as some folks can get pretty uptight over spoilers.

Excellent point. I remember when the dexter Season 4 premier "leaked" and everybody watched it. I abstained, and when Dexter I was sooooo glad I didn't watch it.

wait some people didn't like the show leading up to rita's death?
I was excited that she got killed, I thought she was bringing the show down and her entire storyline in season 3 was completely unnecessary
