Not one person has advocated only positive comments be allowed. The discussion is about posts that go beyond a critique. Or have no apostrophes.

Pretty sure that the OP is old. Not to be disrespectful to him but I think he's really old. If anything it's they millennial who are more disrespectful.

A forum where people are allowed to type their response ABOVE the quoted text? That would never be considered a civilized place by any sane man!

My advice is use to use the report feature when you see posters who keep dragging discussions down without adding any contributions themselves. The pure trolls tend to rile everyone up and make the mood more hostile.
But yeah, we could all stand to be a bit more civil in our discourse.

Hey welcome back!! Now if we can get Stryker Steve back too, then this forum is already a good measure returned!
How about some conspiracy theory? Not all who claim to be Flames fans are in actual. That's right! - straight up trolls.
Oilers and Canucks have been bad all year. With no meaningful games of their own, the trolls of those groups have gleefully gathered here as Flames only fell apart down the stretch.

I find it ironic that there is any expectation of civility when there are such a large number of posters that are comfortable posting on a hate thread.

But It's a unifying, feel-good kind of hate.

The Edmonton is No Good threads are misunderstood by some folks
Prior to having them, that type of stuff seeped into a ton of other threads. Having those threads has centralized a lot of it and allowed for other threads to remain focused.
More than that though, for the most part I view the E=NG thread to be good natured and a place for us to make fun of the teams' biggest historic rivals.
Those that consider it to be a serious thing, are missing the point.

That's a fun, over-the-top, thread. Calling it a hate thread seems pretty extreme to me. We're Springfield, they're Shelbyville. Rivalries like this are in good fun.

On the topic of internet forums in general, there is another place I frequent that used to be completely unmoderated. The members policed each other ruthlessly and if you ran afoul of the rules (clearly laid out and stickied on the front page) you would be dealt with with extreme prejudice. It was not a very welcoming and inclusive place but the quality of discussion was top flight and threads didn't veer off course or get c@$ted up by trolls or wasters.
Due to issues stemming from posting innapropriate content that forum is now "lightly moderated" and a lot of long time members feel that it is in decline. I tend to agree.
I like it here more, but there is something to be said for an unregulated online community IMO.

I also frequent(ed) a forum with absolutely no moderation. It was fun until the topic it was based around had long since passed it's time(video game released in 1999) At which point the board attracted members solely on the fact that it was a "free speech" forum, which turned it over time into an alt-right, racist, facist sounding board where the most prominent members spend all day complaining about minorities and snowflakes - it went from an off topic forum with a bunch of familiar faces where you could have the most honest conversations imaginable into little more than a place for a couple of people to post /pol screencaps of hyper-sjw tweets and calling people who don't think all Muslims are evil terrorists' workplaces to get them fired
Now, not trying to discredit what you're saying, because prior to what I would call the takeover, i almost exclusively posted there and it was great. also, unless the flames leave town and cp remains for some reason for 15 more years, then the situations arent really comparable. But just what I think is an interesting flipside to this

I hear you. The strength of the place I mentioned is that it is relatively broad spectrum so less prone to irrelevance. Nevertheless it is very different from here and not in a good way necessarily.
On topic, I think this is a good discussion to have as it is important to be aware of our tendencies and self-examination is the road to knowledge. CP is a pretty quality place, for the internet.

As someone who is a member of other forums for other teams this site is a breath of fresh air. Some things I see on this Toronto Raptors forum would get a lifetime ban on here. This is a great site with a wide variety of opinions with some more on the extreme ends, but for the most part people here are very respectful and realistic. The negativity is from the flames underachieving, which I think is normal.

If it bothers you that much maybe you're the one who has to assess why? Is it that hard to just read an annoying comment, shake your head and chuckle, and just get on with your day? Or do we need to make a concerted effort to police the board and make sure everyone displays optimum purity and virtue?

Go and health away venting as much as you want. Do it to people who WANT to be vented at. Don't do it here - many do not want that.
You want to express passionate frustration at how the Flames played/season went/GG coached/Cameron screwed up the PP? No problem. Just don't call people names, act like a childish boor or talk to someone the way you wouldn't, talking to your grandparent, employer etc.
No one is asking for purity and virtue - just common courtesy (which, as I read this thread seems surprisingly uncommon for some).

You'd be correct.
And I'm really happy to have a good argument. I spend a fair portion of my life doing just that with CRA on a pretty regular basis. But I don't call them asinine idiots either...that tends to be somewhat counterproductive. No different here.

There are already forum rules and mods already seem to take action on infractions as far as I know. I suppose the rules aren't broad enough to cover your definition of boorishness? You could actually message the mods on specific instances of harassment, etc. if you feel posters have gone too far.
As far speaking as if its an employer, I'm not sure many posters are itching to come here and discuss the Flames just like they discuss TPS reports at their corporate, cubicle/office culture with their boss. People get spirited here because its an escape to follow the team and be passionate about it. I don't see what's wrong with that. I would hate to see the life sucked out of this place. We've already had it sucked out of the hockey team.
