It’s funny, we were talking about that last night, how many more injuries there would be with forks. Guess there is a reason it played with spoons!!

Pretty good boardgame haul this Christmas.
Picked up Faiyum for the family. Old-school euro with lots of interaction. By Friedemann Friese, the designer of Power Grid.
Then I just ordered Caverna and Beyond the Sun with my birthday money. 401 Games is having a Boxing Day sale, so got them 10 per cent cent off, along with free shipping.

I got Earth, which I am very much looking forward to trying out.

Just saw this thread, right up my alley

The big hits this holiday season for me were agility board games. Flick em up (Dead of Winter) was a blast as a co-op zombie shooter. You flick a little movement puck to move and bullets to shoot zombies while completing scenarios.
We also played a bunch of Dungeon Fighter, another co-op game where you roll dice onto a target as accurately as you can to deal damage. Game makes you add trick shots to your rolls while fighting specific monsters or using your weapons. Some examples would be hot potatoing the dice to a friend before rolling, or throwing it under your leg.

Glad to hear your crew enjoyed it. We played two of the games one of my sons got this year - Skulls and Wavelength. They were both good fun and fit your 5+ criteria.

For those that don't know, think Yahtzee with Kaiju.

I'm taking your word on this, I read this yesterday and went right out to Sentry Box and they had one left of any version and an add on pack so I grabbed both.
Seriously though I did watch reviews after reading this and it looked right up our alley for a balance of fun and not too difficult with a little bit of strategy. Going to test it out this weekend.

Ravine is a great game for 2-6 players, and it's co-operative which can make for a fun dynamic in a family.
Dixit is basically Balderdash but with pictures instead of words. Warning: you will want to get an expansion pack after playing the game 4-5 times.
Skull is wicked simple, highly portable, quick to play and explain, and very fun.
Azul is max four players, but it's a game with a really interesting increase in complexity and strategy as it goes on.
Boss Monster is also 2-4 players, but is extremely silly fun, and also highly portable.

So many great recommendations, thanks team.
I was very close to picking up a copy of Ark Nova for the family, but held off for fear of it being too "heavy" for my six year old. He does keep up with us on Catan nights, and has even legitimately won. I thought the kids would love the idea of curating their own zoo because they love animals and gaming in general.
Thoughts?

Would not recommend Ark Nova for a 6-year old unless the kid is an absolute genius. Wouldn't even recommend it for most adults unless I know they have heavyish game tolerance.
But Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Splendor, Sushi Go (Party is the better version), King of Tokyo and Love Letter might work. Maybe even 7 Wonders (normal or Architects).
I have not played but have heard good things about My Little Scythe. For a lighter zoo-themed game there's Zooloretto, which I have also not played.

If you want a zoo game that is good for both younger kids and adults, then New York Zoo is really fun. You collect animals for your zoo to get more pieces to add which are regular shapes and go together like Tetris. You can either really strategize or not and it's still enjoyable which is rare for a lot of games.
