We tried a new one last week called Mystery of the Abbey. It was actually pretty good. It's a mix of Clue and Guess Who. The instruction manual is like a novel though.

We played that a few times. It was fun, but seemed too short.

My default is usually Settlers of Catan. Friends just got into the something and Knights and heard that was awesome.
Lately I've been playing some san juan and and puerto rico. They're pretty similar... but San Juan is a better starter game and once you get the feel of it, Puerto Rico takes it further.
My family seems to like Agricola but I find it kinda meh...
Dominion is also really fun... wish it would play more than 4. Sometimes we just include 5 players.
Edit: Chicago Express and Ticket to Ride are also pretty fun.

The guessing and use of logic to rule out suspects was fun. Just thought that not much strategy could be used leading up to that as it was pretty slow moving about the abbey, you could only get to a few rooms before suddenly it was over.
Maybe we did it wrong?
For those not in the know it is based (I assume) on the novel by Umberto Eco, The Name Of The Rose. Also of course the Sean Connery movie of the same name.

If you have Dominion and Intrigue it plays 5 and 6 players. Intrigue has the rules for it. You just include 4 more of each victory point card and 10 more curses for each player you add past 4.

Pandemic is a really, really fun game for anyone that's never played it.
It's a cooperative boardgame, which is pretty fun and different.
In the same vein, Shadows over Camelot's also really fun, it's also a cooperative boardgame, but there's a chance for having a traitor amongst the group.

It's 7.

I've never been a fan of A&A. Too many balance issues in my opinion.

Never played A&A (I know, I know), but this is funny to me. Diplomacy has huge balance issues (borne out statistically, different countries have different win percentages). Unless of course you're talking about "Five Italies".

I've played it once, didn't really like it. Without competition (direct or indirect) it's basically just a giant game of solitaire. You can play an entire game just being told what to do by the other players.

Axis and Allies (Original). The Europe and Pacific theater editions are alright.
Machiavelli (Diplomacy varient). Frakkin' fantastic game.
Ticket to Ride. Fun 'thinking while drinking' game. Good social game.
Carcassonne. Amazingly fun game. Good family night game.
TALISMAN!!!! (Good luck finding one though)

I love board games, but finding people who will takehe time to learn a new one and put aside hours to play is next to impossible

I know that card games probably don't apply here, and when you think of cards it's always the six thousand variations of poker, but if you have 4 people Spades is a lot of fun!

Too new. He'll choose Go.
Always loved playing Clue, Monopoly, Crib, and yes, chess - though I suck at it.
I remember Careers as well, though I wonder if I simply remember it fondly because I've completely forgotten how that game was played.
The absolute worst game though is The Farming Game. It is as frustrating and tedious as actually farming during the Great Depression.

For me Dominion and Agricola are fun, but its never something I would bring out, even ahead of easy to play games like T2R and PowerGrid.
I am not a fan of cooperative games like Pandemic.
Another game which is surprisingly fun is Battlestar Galactica (quasi cooperative) - not a fan of the Pegasus expansion, the original is just fine IMO.
