No, I had the pleasure of Ft. McMurray this weekend instead of California!

I decided to make a last minute trip to LA today, to catch the Flames Ducks tomorrow. We'll be in the club seats. Can't wait!

I wish I didn't have two papers due this week or I'd do the same.

I'm going to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory this morning to hang out with actual rocket scientists. I'll ask them about the UFO in SoCal last night from the other thread.

I pity the Ducks tonight.

Back at work this morning. Had a great time in LA this weekend!

Happy to meet Aeneas and troutman and friends at the game on Saturday.
Special thanks to Aeneas for getting that puck for my son.

A few things about the Staples Center reminded me of Rexal:
Statue of Wayne Gretzky out front...Check
Good number of jerseys with Gretzky name bars including one Oilers jersey at a Flames-Kings game...Check
Mullets...Check

The mullet is alive and well down here.

Enjoy the game tonight against the Ducks troutman and aeneas we will be watching for you.

I saw that Oilers jersey too. Jerk.
I think my sister was even more excited about the puck I caught for her.
We hung out at ESPN for quite a while after the game. Then we ended up taking the bus to Union station and the train to Pasadena. We met some characters.

These two wasted guys accosted us. One kept saying, "Hockey is soccer on ice. Hah ha." Then demonstrating on our friend how he got stabbed.

He said hockey isn't a real sport, football they do this (attempts tackle) baseball they do this (swings at imaginary pitch). He said football and baseball have "real" athletes. I said so O linemen and David Wells are shining examples of the real athletes?

The other guy at least knew his hockey. Regaled me with his stories of game 6 in 1998 when the Kings lost in OT. Also that they would have won the Stanley Cup if not for McSorley's stick.

Lady in a store (we were all still wearing our "colours") asked if those were our high school football jerseys.

Clerk in Amoeba records knew we were from Calgary. But you have to be cool to work there.

troutman off to JPL, so the rest of us are just going to drink to get ready for the anaheim trip. Hoping our trip back from Anaheim to Altadena (long ways) late tonight will resemble movie The Warriors.

"Duuuuuucckkkkks! Come out to Plaaaaaaaayyyyyy!"

I had an exclusive tour of JPL today.

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/index.cfm

I saw models of probes like Voyager and Cassini. They showed me a giant "clean room" where they are building the next Mars rover; it will be nuclear powered. Spirit is currently stuck on Mars, so I saw where they are simulating the predicament, to figure out a way to free it.

Free Spirit!

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/about/index.cfm

Trailblazing has been the business of JPL since it was established by the California Institute of Technology in the 1930s. America's first satellite, Explorer 1 which launched in 1958, was created at JPL. In the decades that followed, we sent the first robotic craft to the moon and out across the solar system, reconnoitering all of the planets. Pushing the outer edge of exploration, in fact, is the reason JPL exists as a NASA laboratory.

In that spirit, this is an exceptionally busy period for JPL in laying new paths. An exciting step in the search for exoplanets took place earlier this year when we launched Kepler, a spaceborne telescope that will seek out Earth-like planets as they pass in front of other stars. JPL contributed key technology to two European Space Agency spacecraft launched together in May, Herschel and Planck. In December we will launch another observatory, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. They all join our currently operational Spitzer Space Telescope and Galaxy Evolution Explorer astronomical missions.

Among our robotic spacecraft arrayed across the solar system, Dawn is using ion propulsion to take it into orbit around two bodies for the first time ever -- the large asteroid Vesta and the dwarf planet Ceres. Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is returning exceptionally detailed photos of the Red Planet's surface, while the rovers Spirit and Opportunity keep going far beyond the mission they were originally designed for. Last year the Phoenix lander successfully found water ice on Mars' arctic plains. The flagship explorer Cassini continues its orbits of Saturn, scrutinizing the ringed planet and its moons, including the haze-shrouded Titan in an extended mission. The Voyagers are exploring the edge of our solar system.

Off to the O.C now to see the Flames at the Honda Center.

Enjoy the game troutman!

Off-topic: I talk to my son about the solar system and in particular the exploration of Mars. He is really interested in Spirit though I do not have the heart to tell him that the rover is stuck. Next trip to LA I will have to see about taking him to the JPL.
